Championship background

Sebastian Vettel arrived at round 9 leading the 2017 F1 World Championship on 153 points, with Lewis Hamilton on 139. Mercedes headed the constructors’ standings with 250 points.

Race entries

The 10 teams kept the same race line-ups for the Austrian Grand Prix. Alfonso Celis, Sergey Sirotkin also took part in practice.

Free Practice

Lewis Hamilton led FP1 on soft tyres as drivers repeatedly tested the limits of the short, demanding circuit. Sebastian Vettel and Valtteri Bottas spun at Turn 1, while Kimi Räikkönen flat-spotted his tyres during an excursion. Lance Stroll and Max Verstappen also had moments as the teams worked through their opening setup programmes.

Lewis Hamilton lowered the benchmark again in FP2, but the session also brought repair work and interrupted programmes. Max Verstappen lost time while Red Bull attended to his brakes, and Valtteri Bottas spun at Turn 6. Fernando Alonso joined the ultrasoft running later before attention shifted towards longer runs with heavier fuel loads.

Sebastian Vettel moved ahead in FP3 as Lewis Hamilton’s weekend became more complicated. Already facing a gearbox penalty, Lewis Hamilton reported vibration, ran wide at Turn 3 and returned slowly to the pits for checks around the right-front brake. Carlos Sainz also stopped early with an engine problem, losing valuable preparation before qualifying.

Lewis Hamilton received a five-place grid penalty for an unscheduled gearbox change.

Pascal Wehrlein was required to start from pit lane, as his car was modified while under Parc Fermé conditions.

What happened in the 2017 Austrian Grand Prix?

Valtteri Bottas produced an exceptionally quick getaway to retain the lead. The start was examined by the stewards, but no penalty followed. Behind him, Daniil Kvyat hit Fernando Alonso, who was pushed into Max Verstappen; both Alonso and Verstappen retired.

Bottas built an early cushion over Sebastian Vettel and kept Mercedes in command through the pit-stop phase. Lewis Hamilton, starting further back after his penalty, had to work through the order rather than attack for the lead immediately.

The final stint brought two battles to life. Sebastian Vettel closed rapidly on Valtteri Bottas, while Hamilton caught Daniel Ricciardo in the fight for third. Both challengers applied pressure without completing a decisive pass.

Valtteri Bottas reached the flag for his second career victory, with Vettel less than a second behind. Ricciardo secured another podium ahead of Hamilton, and Romain Grosjean delivered sixth for Haas. The Williams drivers both recovered into the points after their poor qualifying.

Further down the points places, Sergio Pérez, Esteban Ocon, Felipe Massa and Lance Stroll completed the scoring positions. Lewis Hamilton set the fastest lap, but no bonus point was awarded under the 2017 rules.

After the race, Sebastian Vettel headed the drivers’ standings with 171 points, followed by Lewis Hamilton on 151. Mercedes led the constructors’ table on 287, with Ferrari on 254.
