Championship background

Lewis Hamilton arrived at round 19 leading the 2017 F1 World Championship on 333 points, with Sebastian Vettel on 277. Mercedes headed the constructors’ standings with 595 points.

Race entries

The 10 teams kept the same race line-ups for the Brazilian Grand Prix. Antonio Giovinazzi, Charles Leclerc, George Russell also took part in practice.

Free Practice

Lewis Hamilton lowered the circuit benchmark in FP1 as Mercedes began strongly. George Russell made his first Grand Prix practice appearance, while Brendon Hartley’s session was disrupted by another Renault engine failure. Sebastian Vettel also spun at Turn 9 before the leading drivers switched from soft tyres to supersofts for their quicker attempts.

Lewis Hamilton stayed ahead in FP2, with the supersoft tyre offering a relatively modest improvement over the soft during the quick runs. Brendon Hartley returned after a power-unit change, while Antonio Giovinazzi took over Kevin Magnussen’s Haas for an unusual afternoon practice appearance. Marcus Ericsson spun and touched the barriers before teams concentrated on longer race simulations.

Valtteri Bottas narrowly edged Lewis Hamilton in FP3 as Ferrari moved much closer to Mercedes. Lance Stroll lost drive and stopped at Turn 6 early in the session, reducing his preparation. The leading teams then built towards their final quick attempts, with less than a tenth separating the two Mercedes and two Ferraris.

What happened in the 2017 Brazilian Grand Prix?

Sebastian Vettel launched past Valtteri Bottas into the first corner. Several midfield incidents caused immediate retirements, with Esteban Ocon‘s remarkable sequence of race finishes ending after contact with Romain Grosjean.

Vettel maintained control through the restart and the pit-stop phase. Bottas stayed close enough to keep the Ferrari working, but could not overturn the order established at the start.

Lewis Hamilton extended his opening stint on soft tyres and briefly led as the cars ahead stopped. After his own change he passed Max Verstappen and closed on Kimi Räikkönen, but the Ferrari driver protected third.

Vettel won ahead of Bottas and Räikkönen, with Hamilton completing a tight leading quartet. Daniel Ricciardo recovered to sixth after an early setback, while Felipe Massa held off Fernando Alonso and Sergio Perez for seventh in his final home Grand Prix.

Further down the points places, Felipe Massa, Fernando Alonso, Sergio Pérez and Nico Hülkenberg completed the scoring positions. Max Verstappen set the fastest lap, but no bonus point was awarded under the 2017 rules.

After the race, Lewis Hamilton headed the drivers’ standings with 345 points, followed by Sebastian Vettel on 302. Mercedes led the constructors’ table on 625, with Ferrari on 495.
