Championship background

Lewis Hamilton arrived at round 18 leading the 2017 F1 World Championship on 331 points, with Sebastian Vettel on 265. Mercedes headed the constructors’ standings with 575 points.

Race entries

Pierre Gasly returned to Toro Rosso alongside Brendon Hartley, replacing Daniil Kvyat.

Free Practice

Valtteri Bottas led FP1 on a dusty, slippery circuit, while Lewis Hamilton struggled to put together a clean quick lap. Brendon Hartley briefly stopped after an engine shutdown but got going again. Alfonso Celis then crashed at Turn 16 during his Force India appearance, causing a red flag and an eight-minute interruption to the opening programme.

Daniel Ricciardo led FP2, which began with a dramatic tyre failure for Romain Grosjean and red flags to clear the debris. Stoffel Vandoorne’s difficult day continued when a loose wheel stopped him at pit exit after an earlier engine change. Lewis Hamilton also spun, but the teams eventually completed their quick laps and moved into longer race simulations.

Max Verstappen set the fastest FP3 time as the leading teams began their final ultrasoft qualifying simulations. Pierre Gasly’s preparations suffered an early setback when he stopped at Turn 13. With cool, dry conditions and no rain interruption, the rest of the field could concentrate on refining their cars before the afternoon session.

What happened in the 2017 Mexican Grand Prix?

Max Verstappen attacked Sebastian Vettel through the opening corners and emerged in front. Lewis Hamilton also moved alongside the Ferrari, but contact left Vettel needing a new front wing and Hamilton nursing a rear puncture back to the pits.

Both championship contenders dropped to the back. Vettel made rapid progress, while Hamilton’s recovery was slower with damage to his Mercedes. At the front, Verstappen established control ahead of Valtteri Bottas.

A virtual safety car following Brendon Hartley‘s retirement helped Kimi Räikkönen move into third and Lance Stroll into fifth. Vettel continued climbing, but fourth place was insufficient to take the championship to Brazil.

Max Verstappen won ahead of Valtteri Bottas and Kimi Räikkönen. Lewis Hamilton finished ninth, enough to be crowned champion with two rounds remaining. Esteban Ocon took fifth behind Vettel, with Lance Stroll sixth and home favourite Sergio Perez seventh.

Further down the points places, Sergio Pérez, Kevin Magnussen, Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso completed the scoring positions. Sebastian Vettel set the fastest lap, but no bonus point was awarded under the 2017 rules.

After the race, Lewis Hamilton headed the drivers’ standings with 333 points, followed by Sebastian Vettel on 277. Mercedes led the constructors’ table on 595, with Ferrari on 455.
