Championship background

Sebastian Vettel arrived at round 10 leading the 2017 F1 World Championship on 171 points, with Lewis Hamilton on 151. Mercedes headed the constructors’ standings with 287 points.

Race entries

The 10 teams kept the same race line-ups for the British Grand Prix. Antonio Giovinazzi also took part in practice.

Free Practice

Valtteri Bottas led FP1 as Mercedes showed strong pace on soft tyres. Sebastian Vettel briefly tested the experimental cockpit shield, but reported distorted vision and dizziness and cut the trial short. With rivals using supersofts for their quicker laps, Mercedes’ performance on the harder compound was a particularly encouraging start.

Valtteri Bottas stayed ahead in FP2, although Kimi Räikkönen brought Ferrari closer. Lewis Hamilton’s best lap came on soft tyres, unlike the supersoft attempts of several rivals. Max Verstappen ran off at Becketts, while Felipe Massa and Kimi Räikkönen spun in separate incidents before teams settled into longer runs to assess race pace.

Lewis Hamilton led FP3 with Sebastian Vettel close behind before rain arrived with around 18 minutes remaining. Drivers initially returned to the pits, then ventured out on intermediates to sample the changing conditions. Daniel Ricciardo spun near the end but avoided the barriers, while gearbox penalties already complicated his and Valtteri Bottas’ qualifying prospects.

Qualifying

Lewis Hamilton headed qualifying for Mercedes, with Kimi Räikkönen second and Sebastian Vettel third.

Lewis Hamilton was emphatic in Q3 after a damp opening segment. Fernando Alonso timed a switch to slicks to top Q1, while Daniel Ricciardo‘s technical problems and grid penalties left him near the back.

Valtteri Bottas received a five-place grid penalty for an unscheduled gearbox change.

Fernando Alonso received a thirty-place grid penalty for use of additional power unit elements.

Daniel Ricciardo received a five-place grid penalty for an unscheduled gearbox change and a ten-place grid penalty for use of additional power unit elements.

What happened in the 2017 British Grand Prix?

Jolyon Palmer‘s hydraulic failure on the formation lap forced another tour and reduced the distance to 51 laps. Lewis Hamilton retained the lead when the race began, while contact between the Toro Rosso drivers soon brought out the safety car.

Hamilton pulled clear again at the restart. Sebastian Vettel had to fight Max Verstappen before Ferrari used the stops to move him ahead, while Valtteri Bottas extended his opening stint on the harder starting compound.

Bottas used fresher supersoft tyres to catch and pass Vettel late in the race. Daniel Ricciardo was also charging, recovering from 19th on the grid to fifth after working through the midfield.

Both Ferraris then suffered late front-left tyre problems. Kimi Räikkönen lost second to Bottas but salvaged third, while Vettel fell to seventh after a longer journey back to the pits. Hamilton completed a grand slam and drew level with Jim Clark and Alain Prost on five British Grand Prix victories.

Further down the points places, Sebastian Vettel, Esteban Ocon, Sergio Pérez and Felipe Massa completed the scoring positions. Lewis Hamilton set the fastest lap, but no bonus point was awarded under the 2017 rules.

After the race, Sebastian Vettel headed the drivers’ standings with 177 points, followed by Lewis Hamilton on 176. Mercedes led the constructors’ table on 330, with Ferrari on 275.
