Championship background

Formula One returned from its summer break with Lewis Hamilton leading Valtteri Bottas by 62 points in the 2019 F1 World Championship. Ferrari was still searching for its first win of the year, and the long straights at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps offered a strong opportunity.

Race entries

Alexander Albon moved from Toro Rosso to Red Bull Racing alongside Max Verstappen, with Pierre Gasly returning to Toro Rosso to partner Daniil Kvyat. Nicholas Latifi drove George Russell‘s Williams in FP1. Kimi Räikkönen competed despite a leg injury, with Marcus Ericsson available as reserve cover for Alfa Romeo Racing.

Free Practice

Sebastian Vettel headed a Ferrari one-two in FP1, recording 1:44.574 ahead of Charles Leclerc. Max Verstappen was third as the field settled back into action after the summer break.

Charles Leclerc led FP2 with a 1:44.123, finishing comfortably clear of Sebastian Vettel. Valtteri Bottas was third, but Ferrari‘s straight-line performance was already making it the team to catch.

Charles Leclerc remained quickest in FP3 with a 1:44.206 ahead of Sebastian Vettel and Valtteri Bottas. Lewis Hamilton crashed at the Fagnes chicane, leaving Mercedes with repair work before qualifying.

Qualifying

Charles Leclerc took pole with an emphatic 1:42.519, beating Sebastian Vettel by 0.748 seconds. Lewis Hamilton recovered from his practice accident to take third, with Valtteri Bottas fourth and Max Verstappen fifth.

Daniel Ricciardo and Nico Hülkenberg placed Renault sixth and seventh in the session, although engine penalties altered the starting order. Alexander Albon also faced power-unit penalties on his Red Bull Racing debut and would begin seventeenth, giving him plenty of work to do on Sunday.

Daniel Ricciardo and Nico Hülkenberg both received a five-place grid penalty for exceeding their quota for power unit components.

Lance Stroll, Alexander Albon, Antonio Giovinazzi and Daniil Kvyat are required to start from the back of the grid for exceeding their quota for power unit components. Kvyat and Giovinazzi also both received an additional five-place grid penalty for an unscheduled gearbox change.

Carlos Sainz had a 15-place grid penalty for exceeding his quota for power unit components.

Robert Kubica failed to set a Q1 time within the 107% requirement. He raced at the stewards’ discretion. He started the race from the pit lane for changing power unit components and his rear wing under parc fermé conditions and received an additional 5 place grid penalty for an unscheduled gearbox change. The penalty made no difference as he started from the pit lane.

What happened in the 2019 Belgian Grand Prix?

Charles Leclerc held the lead at the start, while Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton disputed second. Further back, Max Verstappen made contact with Kimi Räikkönen at La Source. Damage to the Red Bull Racing car sent Verstappen into the barriers at Raidillon, ending his race on the opening lap.

After the early safety-car period, Charles Leclerc established his advantage. Sebastian Vettel stopped before the leading Ferrari and gained track position through the pit sequence, but the older tyres left him vulnerable once both cars had completed their stops.

Ferrari asked Sebastian Vettel to let Charles Leclerc through, restoring the younger driver’s lead. Vettel then kept Lewis Hamilton behind for several valuable laps before the Mercedes driver found a way past. A second stop left Vettel fourth, with the fastest-lap point providing an additional reward.

Lewis Hamilton began to reduce the gap to Charles Leclerc as the race entered its closing stages. The Ferrari driver’s tyres were fading, but he kept his composure through the final lap and reached the flag less than a second ahead. Valtteri Bottas completed the podium.

Alexander Albon made steady progress on his first afternoon with Red Bull Racing and finished fifth after a late pass on Sergio Perez. The result also came at the expense of Lando Norris, whose impressive run towards fifth ended with a loss of power at the start of the final lap.

Sergio Perez took sixth, followed by Daniil Kvyat, Nico Hülkenberg, Pierre Gasly and Lance Stroll. The points gave both Toro Rosso drivers a useful result on a weekend when their line-up had changed, while McLaren was left to reflect on a particularly painful missed opportunity.

Charles Leclerc‘s first victory also ended Ferrari‘s wait for a win in 2019. Lewis Hamilton extended his championship lead to 65 points over Valtteri Bottas, but the sporting result remained secondary to the loss felt across the paddock. Leclerc’s success carried both achievement and remembrance.
