Championship background

Lewis Hamilton led Valtteri Bottas by 36 points after France, where Mercedes had taken its eighth win of the season. Austria’s heat and short, demanding layout presented a different challenge, and Ferrari‘s pace promised an opportunity for Charles Leclerc to fight at the front.

Race entries

The regular 20 drivers took part, with no practice substitutes. A large contingent of Max Verstappen supporters added to the atmosphere at Red Bull Racing‘s home event, where he had also won the previous year.

Free Practice

Lewis Hamilton topped FP1 with a 1:04.838, followed by Sebastian Vettel and Valtteri Bottas. The compact lap left the leading times closely grouped.

Charles Leclerc led FP2 with a 1:05.086 in an interrupted session. Bottas and Max Verstappen both crashed, while Vettel also spun. Pierre Gasly finished third behind Leclerc and Bottas.

Leclerc remained fastest in FP3, improving to 1:03.987 ahead of Hamilton and Bottas. Ferrari looked particularly strong as qualifying approached.

Qualifying

Charles Leclerc took pole with a 1:03.003. Lewis Hamilton was second fastest but received a three-place penalty for impeding Kimi Räikkönen; the interaction of the grid penalties left Hamilton starting fourth and Max Verstappen alongside Leclerc on the front row.

Valtteri Bottas would start third. Sebastian Vettel could not set a Q3 time because of a technical problem, while Lando Norris qualified sixth. Several penalties reshaped the midfield, including a back-row start for Carlos Sainz after power-unit changes.

Lewis Hamilton received a three-place grid penalty for impeding Kimi Räikkönen during qualifying. However, because of the way the penalties were applied, Hamilton dropped two places instead of three and he would start fourth.

Kevin Magnussen received a five-place grid penalty for an unscheduled gearbox change.

Nico Hülkenberg received a five-place grid penalty for exceeding his quota for power unit components. However, because of the way the penalties were applied, Hülkenberg dropped three places instead of five and he would start fifteenth.

Alexander Albon and Carlos Sainz were required to start from the back of the grid for exceeding their quotas for power unit components.

George Russell received a three-place grid penalty for impeding Daniil Kvyat during qualifying. Additionally, he was required to start from the pit lane for changing his front wing under parc fermé conditions.

What happened in the 2019 Austrian Grand Prix?

Charles Leclerc made a clean start, but Max Verstappen‘s anti-stall intervened and the Red Bull Racing driver dropped deep into the leading group. Bottas took second, while Norris briefly challenged Hamilton and Räikkönen ran strongly in the opening laps.

Verstappen began recovering positions as Leclerc built his race at the front. Vettel also moved forward, though a slow pit stop caused by a communication problem cost him valuable time. Mercedes, meanwhile, struggled to manage temperatures in the hot conditions.

Hamilton damaged his front wing over the kerbs and needed a replacement at his stop. Verstappen extended his first stint, then emerged on fresher hard tyres with the opportunity to attack the cars ahead.

The recovery gathered momentum in the closing stages. Verstappen passed Vettel and then Bottas before closing rapidly on Leclerc. Their first close contest at Turn 3 ended with Leclerc fighting back around the outside to retain the lead.

Verstappen tried again on lap 69, taking the inside line at Turn 3. The cars touched and Leclerc ran wide, leaving Verstappen ahead. The stewards reviewed the move after the race and took no further action, confirming the Red Bull Racing victory.

Bottas finished third, with Vettel passing Hamilton late on for fourth. Norris took an excellent sixth ahead of Gasly, while Sainz recovered to eighth. Räikkönen and Antonio Giovinazzi completed a double-points finish for Alfa Romeo Racing, with Giovinazzi scoring his first Formula 1 point.

Verstappen also set fastest lap. All 20 drivers finished, and Honda celebrated its first Grand Prix win since 2006. Hamilton retained a 31-point championship lead, but Mercedes‘ perfect winning sequence had finally ended.
