Championship background

Bottas led Hamilton by one point heading into the fifth round. The arrival of the European season brought development updates and renewed scrutiny of Ferrari‘s challenge, but Mercedes had already finished first and second in every race so far.

Race entries

The regular 20 drivers contested the weekend, with no practice substitutes. Daniel Ricciardo carried a three-place grid penalty for his collision with Daniil Kvyat in Azerbaijan, adding another complication to his efforts to build momentum at Renault.

Free Practice

Valtteri Bottas led FP1 with a 1:17.951, ahead of Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc. Mercedes began the weekend strongly on a circuit the teams knew well from pre-season testing.

Bottas also topped FP2, setting a 1:17.284 and beating Lewis Hamilton by 0.049 seconds. Leclerc was third as the Ferrari drivers continued to search for a response to the Mercedes pace.

Hamilton moved ahead in FP3 with a 1:16.568. Leclerc and Bottas completed the top three, setting up another close contest within Mercedes for pole position.

Daniel Ricciardo received a three-place grid penalty for causing a collision at the previous round.

Nico Hülkenberg was required to start from the pit lane after changing the specification of his front wing during qualifying and changing brake map parameters. He also was required to start from the rear of the starting grid for changing multiple power unit components.

Antonio Giovinazzi received a five-place grid penalty for an unscheduled gearbox change.

George Russell received a five-place grid penalty for an unscheduled gearbox change.

What happened in the 2019 Spanish Grand Prix?

Lewis Hamilton made the better start and took the lead into Turn 1. Sebastian Vettel briefly threatened around the outside, but ran wide, allowing Valtteri Bottas to hold second. Max Verstappen then swept past Vettel through Turn 3 to claim third.

Hamilton established control at the front, while Bottas could not reproduce his qualifying advantage. Verstappen kept the Ferraris behind him and emerged as the leading challenger to Mercedes, although the fight for victory remained out of reach.

Ferrari exchanged its drivers’ positions during the race as their strategies developed. Vettel initially let Charles Leclerc through, before the order was reversed later. The manoeuvres did not produce a podium, with Vettel eventually finishing fourth and Leclerc fifth.

Lando Norris and Lance Stroll collided at Turn 2 in the second half of the race, bringing out the safety car. It gave the field a chance to close up, but Hamilton handled the restart and the leading six retained their positions.

The livelier battle was within Haas. Kevin Magnussen got ahead of Romain Grosjean after the restart and went on to finish seventh. Grosjean lost further ground but still took tenth, giving the team a double-points result.

Carlos Sainz delighted the home crowd with eighth for McLaren, and Daniil Kvyat finished ninth. Pierre Gasly completed the leading six. The Norris–Stroll collision produced the only two retirements of the afternoon.

Hamilton added fastest lap to his victory and moved seven points ahead of Bottas. Mercedes had now taken five consecutive one-two finishes, leaving Ferrari and Red Bull Racing with a substantial early-season gap to close.
