Championship background

Ferrari had won the previous three races, but Lewis Hamilton still held a 65-point lead over Valtteri Bottas in the 2019 F1 World Championship. Mercedes had won every Russian Grand Prix since the event joined the calendar in 2014, giving it a strong record to defend.

Race entries

The regular 20-driver line-up remained unchanged. Red Bull Racing and Toro Rosso faced power-unit penalties, affecting Max Verstappen, Alexander Albon, Pierre Gasly and Daniil Kvyat, while Robert Kubica also required additional components for his Williams.

Free Practice

Charles Leclerc led FP1 in 1:34.462, with Max Verstappen only 0.082 seconds behind and Sebastian Vettel third. Ferrari began the weekend with the pace that had carried it through the preceding rounds.

Max Verstappen moved to the top in FP2, recording 1:33.162 ahead of Charles Leclerc and Valtteri Bottas. The result suggested Red Bull Racing had competitive speed despite the grid penalties its drivers faced.

Charles Leclerc restored Ferrari to first place in FP3 with a 1:32.733. Sebastian Vettel was second and Lewis Hamilton third. Daniil Kvyat‘s engine failure left Toro Rosso with repairs that prevented him from taking part in qualifying.

Qualifying

Charles Leclerc claimed his fourth consecutive pole with a 1:31.628. Lewis Hamilton split the Ferraris in second, ahead of Sebastian Vettel, while Max Verstappen set the fourth-fastest time before his grid penalty was applied.

Alexander Albon crashed at Turn 13 in Q1 and later had to start from the pit lane after changes to his car. Daniil Kvyat recorded no time, while Carlos Sainz and Nico Hülkenberg produced strong midfield performances. Ferrari had the fastest car over one lap, but Hamilton’s position on the front row kept Mercedes firmly in the contest.

Max Verstappen and Pierre Gasly both received a five-place grid penalty for exceeding their quota for power unit components.

Robert Kubica was required to start from the back of the grid for exceeding his quota for power unit components.

Alexander Albon initially received a five-place grid penalty for exceeding his quota for power unit components, but due to crashing in qualifying he was required to start the race from the pit lane for changing the floor.

Daniil Kvyat was initially required to start from the back of the grid for exceeding his quota for power unit components, but he did not take part in qualifying and was allowed to race at the stewards’ discretion.

What happened in the 2019 Russian Grand Prix?

Sebastian Vettel used the slipstream on the long run to Turn 2 to move from third into the lead, passing Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc. Behind them, contact involving Antonio Giovinazzi, Romain Grosjean and Daniel Ricciardo sent Grosjean into the barriers and brought out an early safety car.

Ferrari had discussed using the tow at the start and restoring Charles Leclerc to the lead afterwards. Sebastian Vettel, however, built a gap and argued that slowing to exchange positions risked allowing Lewis Hamilton closer. The conversation continued over the radio as the Ferraris ran first and second.

Ferrari eventually brought Charles Leclerc in before Sebastian Vettel, giving Leclerc the undercut. Vettel rejoined behind his team-mate, but his race then ended almost immediately with a hybrid-system problem. He stopped on track, triggering a virtual safety car at precisely the moment Mercedes could benefit.

Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas made their pit stops under the reduced-speed conditions. Hamilton emerged in the lead, and a subsequent crash for George Russell brought a full safety car. Ferrari stopped Charles Leclerc again for soft tyres, dropping him behind Bottas into third.

When racing resumed, Lewis Hamilton controlled the front while Valtteri Bottas kept Charles Leclerc behind. The Ferrari driver could not turn his fresh tyres into a pass, and Mercedes completed its first one-two since the British Grand Prix. Hamilton also collected the fastest-lap point.

Max Verstappen finished fourth, with Alexander Albon recovering from the pit lane to fifth. Carlos Sainz took sixth ahead of Sergio Perez, Lando Norris, Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hülkenberg. Magnussen’s five-second penalty for failing to follow the prescribed route after running wide dropped him behind Norris in the final classification.

Lewis Hamilton extended his lead over Valtteri Bottas to 73 points. Ferrari had shown enough speed to threaten another victory, but Vettel’s retirement and the timing of the neutralisations handed Mercedes the decisive opportunity. The team’s unbeaten Russian Grand Prix record remained intact.
