Championship background

Ferrari arrived with consecutive victories, although the slow corners of the Marina Bay Street Circuit presented a very different challenge from Belgium and Italy. Lewis Hamilton led Valtteri Bottas by 63 points in the 2019 F1 World Championship, with Mercedes hoping to regain the initiative under the floodlights.

Race entries

The same 20 drivers returned for the Singapore weekend. Alexander Albon continued his early run of races with Red Bull Racing, while Pierre Gasly partnered Daniil Kvyat at Toro Rosso.

Free Practice

Max Verstappen led FP1 with a 1:40.259, ahead of Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton. The opening session offered an early indication that Red Bull Racing could challenge on the demanding street circuit.

Lewis Hamilton set the fastest time in FP2, recording 1:38.773 ahead of Max Verstappen and Sebastian Vettel. The floodlit session gave the teams more representative conditions for qualifying and the race.

Charles Leclerc put Ferrari on top in FP3 with a 1:38.192. Lewis Hamilton was second and Sebastian Vettel third, confirming that Ferrari‘s challenge extended beyond its usual straight-line advantage.

Qualifying

Charles Leclerc delivered a spectacular 1:36.217 to secure his third consecutive pole. Lewis Hamilton split the Ferraris in second, with Sebastian Vettel third and Max Verstappen fourth. Valtteri Bottas and Alexander Albon occupied the next two positions.

Carlos Sainz led the midfield runners, but Daniel Ricciardo‘s qualifying result was later disqualified because his Renault exceeded the permitted MGU-K power output. The penalty sent Ricciardo to the back and changed the order behind the leading cars.

Sergio Perez received a five-place grid penalty for an unscheduled gearbox change.

Daniel Ricciardo qualified eighth, but was disqualified for exceeding the MGU-K power limit during Q1. He was allowed to race at the stewards’ discretion. He also received a 10-place grid penalty for exceeding his quota for power unit components. The penalty made no difference as he was disqualified.

What happened in the 2019 Singapore Grand Prix?

Charles Leclerc led away and deliberately kept the early pace under control to protect his tyres. Lewis Hamilton stayed close, with Sebastian Vettel third. The slow pace compressed the field and made the timing of the first pit stops especially important.

Ferrari brought Sebastian Vettel in before Charles Leclerc, and the fresh tyres gave Vettel a powerful undercut. When Leclerc stopped on the following lap, he rejoined behind his team-mate. The order had changed, leaving Vettel to work through cars that had yet to stop while Leclerc questioned the outcome over the radio.

Lewis Hamilton extended his opening stint, but the strategy cost him track position to Max Verstappen. Mercedes managed the gap between its own cars to keep Hamilton ahead of Valtteri Bottas after the stop. Up front, Sebastian Vettel cleared the remaining traffic and established control.

Antonio Giovinazzi briefly led during the pit cycle, providing an unusual moment at the front for Alfa Romeo Racing. Once the stops were complete, the order settled with Sebastian Vettel ahead of Charles Leclerc, Max Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton, Valtteri Bottas and Alexander Albon.

Three safety-car periods interrupted the second half of the race, following incidents involving George Russell, Sergio Perez and Kimi Räikkönen. Each restart brought another chance for the pursuers, but Sebastian Vettel kept the lead and Ferrari maintained its one-two formation.

Lando Norris finished seventh ahead of Pierre Gasly and Nico Hülkenberg. Antonio Giovinazzi retained tenth despite a post-race time penalty. Kevin Magnussen recorded the fastest lap but finished seventeenth, so no fastest-lap bonus point was awarded under the top-ten eligibility rule.

Sebastian Vettel‘s first victory since the 2018 Belgian Grand Prix gave Ferrari three wins in succession and its first one-two since Hungary in 2017. Lewis Hamilton‘s fourth place extended his championship advantage to 65 points over Valtteri Bottas. In retrospect, Singapore would also stand as Vettel’s final Formula One victory.

Antonio Giovinazzi received a 10-second post-race time penalty for failing to follow the race director’s instructions and causing an unsafe situation. His final position was not affected by the penalty as he had finished 18 seconds ahead of Romain Grosjean.
