Championship background

Lewis Hamilton led Valtteri Bottas by 74 points in the 2019 F1 World Championship. Bottas needed to win and gain substantial ground to keep the contest alive, while an eighth-place finish would be enough for Hamilton to settle the title regardless of his team-mate’s result.

Race entries

The same 20 drivers contested the race, with Max Verstappen making his 100th Grand Prix start. Nicholas Latifi replaced George Russell at Williams for FP1. Sergio Perez later received a pit-lane start after failing to stop for the weighbridge procedure at the end of FP2.

Free Practice

Max Verstappen led FP1 in 1:34.057, followed by Sebastian Vettel and Alexander Albon. The circuit’s bumps were a major talking point as drivers assessed both pace and how their cars handled the uneven surface.

Lewis Hamilton headed FP2 with a 1:33.232, ahead of Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen. The session gave Mercedes an encouraging response after Red Bull Racing had led the opening practice.

Max Verstappen returned to first place in FP3 in 1:33.305, with Sebastian Vettel second and Lando Norris an impressive third. Charles Leclerc suffered an engine problem, leaving Ferrari to prepare a replacement before qualifying.

Qualifying

Valtteri Bottas took pole with a 1:32.029, edging Sebastian Vettel by just 0.012 seconds. Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc completed a closely matched leading quartet, while Lewis Hamilton had to settle for fifth.

Alexander Albon qualified sixth ahead of Carlos Sainz, Lando Norris, Daniel Ricciardo and Pierre Gasly. Bottas had done what he needed to keep pressure on the championship leader, but Hamilton remained well placed to secure the title from the third row.

Sergio Perez was required to start the race from the pit lane after failing to stop at the weigh bridge at the end of the second practice session.

What happened in the 2019 United States Grand Prix?

Valtteri Bottas retained the lead, while Lewis Hamilton gained places during the opening lap. Sebastian Vettel struggled immediately and slipped backwards before a rear-suspension failure ended his race. Contact between Alexander Albon and Carlos Sainz also forced Albon into an early recovery effort.

Max Verstappen and Valtteri Bottas made early stops for hard tyres, committing themselves to a different race from Lewis Hamilton. Hamilton extended his opening stint and took the lead during the pit cycle, then switched to hard tyres with the intention of stopping only once.

When Valtteri Bottas and Max Verstappen stopped for a second time, Lewis Hamilton returned to first place. The question became whether his older tyres could survive the remaining laps while keeping the faster cars behind. Bottas steadily reduced the gap and began to attack.

Lewis Hamilton resisted the first attempts, but Valtteri Bottas completed the decisive pass on lap 52. Max Verstappen then closed on Hamilton, although yellow flags following Kevin Magnussen‘s late retirement limited one of the main passing opportunities.

Valtteri Bottas crossed the line for his fourth victory of the season. Lewis Hamilton held second, securing his sixth drivers’ championship and moving beyond Juan Manuel Fangio‘s five titles. Max Verstappen finished third, with Charles Leclerc fourth and taking the fastest-lap point.

Alexander Albon recovered to fifth despite his extra pit stops. Daniel Ricciardo was sixth, ahead of Lando Norris, Carlos Sainz, Nico Hülkenberg and Sergio Perez. A five-second penalty for contact with Perez dropped Daniil Kvyat out of the points in the final classification.

The race delivered both a deserved victory for Valtteri Bottas and the championship confirmation Lewis Hamilton had been approaching for months. Mercedes had already settled the constructors’ contest; now Hamilton had completed another title-winning season with two races still to run.
