Championship background

After the upheaval in Germany, Lewis Hamilton led Valtteri Bottas by 41 points in the 2019 F1 World Championship. Max Verstappen arrived with two wins from the previous three races, giving Red Bull Racing real momentum before the summer break.

Race entries

The same 20 race drivers returned for Hungary. The tight Hungaroring offered Red Bull Racing an opportunity to challenge Mercedes again, while Ferrari needed to recover from a weekend of mixed fortunes at Hockenheim.

Free Practice

Lewis Hamilton led FP1 in 1:17.233, with Max Verstappen and Sebastian Vettel almost inseparable behind him. The early times suggested a close contest, with the leading three covered by just 0.166 seconds.

Pierre Gasly topped a rain-affected FP2 in 1:17.854 ahead of Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton. The interruptions to dry running limited how much the teams could learn from their longer runs.

Lewis Hamilton returned to first place in FP3 with a 1:16.084. Max Verstappen finished only 0.013 seconds behind, while Sebastian Vettel was third, setting up a qualifying session with little room for error.

Qualifying

Max Verstappen finally secured his first Formula One pole, becoming the championship’s 100th different pole-sitter. His 1:14.572 beat Valtteri Bottas by just 0.018 seconds, with Lewis Hamilton third in another tightly contested session.

Charles Leclerc and Sebastian Vettel filled fourth and fifth ahead of Pierre Gasly. Lando Norris led the midfield in seventh, followed by Carlos Sainz, Romain Grosjean and Kimi Räikkönen. Red Bull Racing had the best starting position, but both Mercedes cars were close enough to make the race a strategic challenge.

Antonio Giovinazzi received a three-place grid penalty for impeding Lance Stroll during qualifying.

Daniel Ricciardo was required to start from the back of the grid for exceeding his quota for power unit components.

What happened in the 2019 Hungarian Grand Prix?

Max Verstappen made a strong start and retained the lead. Behind him, Lewis Hamilton passed Valtteri Bottas during a busy opening lap, and contact involving Bottas and Charles Leclerc damaged the Finn’s front wing. An early stop for repairs left Bottas with a long recovery ahead.

The leaders quickly pulled away from Ferrari. Max Verstappen stopped first for hard tyres, with Lewis Hamilton extending his opening stint before making the same compound change. The Mercedes driver returned several seconds behind but rapidly reduced the gap.

Lewis Hamilton launched an attack around the outside at Turn 4, only to run wide and fall back into second. Brake temperatures then forced him to ease his pursuit. With overtaking proving difficult, Mercedes decided to change the shape of the contest.

A second stop put Lewis Hamilton onto fresh medium tyres and left him around 20 seconds behind. Max Verstappen stayed out to protect the lead, but his older hard tyres began to fade as Hamilton produced a sequence of quick laps. What initially looked like a daunting chase became an increasingly urgent defence.

Lewis Hamilton caught Max Verstappen and passed into Turn 1 on lap 67. Red Bull Racing then brought Verstappen in for soft tyres, allowing him to collect the fastest-lap point while retaining second. The win rewarded both Hamilton’s pace and Mercedes‘ willingness to commit to an extra stop.

Sebastian Vettel stretched his first stint and used soft tyres late in the race to catch and pass Charles Leclerc for third. Carlos Sainz delivered another strong fifth for McLaren, ahead of Pierre Gasly and Kimi Räikkönen. Valtteri Bottas recovered to eighth, with Lando Norris ninth and Alexander Albon tenth.

The result sent Lewis Hamilton into the summer break with 250 points and a 62-point lead over Valtteri Bottas. Max Verstappen was just seven points further back. The championship leader had restored his advantage, but the quality of the fight at the front promised plenty for the second half of the season.
