Championship background

Hamilton arrived 31 points ahead of Bottas after Mercedes‘ winning streak ended in Austria. Verstappen’s victory had renewed the challenge from Red Bull Racing, while Leclerc was eager to turn another near-miss into a first win.

Race entries

The same 20 drivers contested the weekend, with no practice substitutes. Silverstone Circuit had been resurfaced again, giving the teams another variable to assess before the home race for Hamilton, Lando Norris and George Russell.

Free Practice

Pierre Gasly set the fastest FP1 time with a 1:27.173, ahead of Valtteri Bottas and Max Verstappen. Romain Grosjean damaged his car at the pit exit, and Kimi Räikkönen‘s stoppage brought out a red flag.

Bottas led FP2 on a 1:26.732, just 0.069 seconds ahead of Lewis Hamilton. Charles Leclerc was third, keeping Ferrari close to the leading Mercedes pair.

Leclerc topped FP3 with a 1:25.905. Sebastian Vettel was only 0.026 seconds behind and Hamilton another 0.023 seconds back, setting up a finely balanced qualifying session.

What happened in the 2019 British Grand Prix?

Valtteri Bottas kept the lead at the start, but Lewis Hamilton immediately applied pressure. Hamilton passed at Luffield, only for Bottas to reclaim the position at Copse in a superb exchange between the Mercedes team-mates.

Behind them, Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen fought hard for position, continuing their rivalry from Austria. Their contest extended into the pit lane, where Red Bull Racing‘s quicker stop briefly put Verstappen ahead before Leclerc fought back on track.

Bottas stopped first among the Mercedes drivers. Hamilton stayed out, and the safety car deployed after Antonio Giovinazzi stopped in the gravel allowed him to pit while retaining the lead. That intervention changed the balance of the race.

Hamilton then controlled the restart and the remaining distance. Bottas needed another stop as his strategy unfolded, leaving Hamilton clear to claim victory. Hamilton added fastest lap on the final tour despite running on much older tyres than his team-mate.

Verstappen passed Vettel for third, but Vettel misjudged his braking at the next corner and hit the rear of the Red Bull Racing car. Both continued after running into the gravel. Vettel needed repairs and received a ten-second penalty, while Verstappen remarkably recovered to fifth with damage.

Leclerc took third ahead of Gasly, who secured his strongest Red Bull Racing result to that point. Carlos Sainz finished sixth, followed by Ricciardo, Räikkönen, Daniil Kvyat and Hülkenberg. Both Haas drivers retired after colliding on the opening lap.

Hamilton’s seventh victory of the season extended his championship advantage to 39 points. The final result was another Mercedes one-two, but the racing that produced it made Silverstone one of the most entertaining afternoons of the year.
