Championship background

The 2019 F1 World Championship arrived in Germany with Lewis Hamilton 39 points clear of Valtteri Bottas. Mercedes had a celebration planned for its home event, but the forecast offered the chasing teams a chance to turn the usual order upside down.

Race entries

The regular 20-driver field contested the weekend. Mercedes wore a special white-and-silver livery to mark its 200th Formula One start as a works team and 125 years of motorsport history, with Hamilton and Bottas hoping to provide the perfect result.

Free Practice

Sebastian Vettel gave the home crowd an encouraging start by leading FP1 in 1:14.013. Charles Leclerc completed a Ferrari one-two, with Lewis Hamilton third as the teams worked in hot conditions.

Charles Leclerc moved ahead in FP2 with a 1:13.449, keeping Sebastian Vettel second and Lewis Hamilton third. Ferrari‘s pace looked promising, although the threat of rain meant the weekend could still change dramatically.

Charles Leclerc remained fastest in FP3, recording 1:12.380 ahead of Max Verstappen and Sebastian Vettel. Ferrari approached qualifying with speed in hand, only for reliability to transform its afternoon.

Qualifying

Lewis Hamilton took pole in 1:11.767, with Max Verstappen joining him on the front row and Valtteri Bottas third. Pierre Gasly secured fourth, while Kimi Räikkönen put Alfa Romeo Racing fifth in an excellent showing for the midfield team.

Ferrari‘s challenge unravelled before it could reach its full potential. Sebastian Vettel failed to set a time after a turbo problem in Q1, leaving him last, and a fuel-system issue prevented Charles Leclerc from running in Q3. The practice pacesetter would start tenth, setting up two very different recovery missions.

Lando Norris was sent to the back of the grid after taking a third MGU-K, a third Energy Store and a third Control Electronics. However, because Norris set a qualifying lap time and Vettel did not, he would only drop three positions to 19th.

Sebastian Vettel failed to set a Q1 time within the 107% requirement but was given permission to race at the stewards’ discretion. He also received a 10-place grid penalty for a third Control Electronics (CE), but his starting position remained unchanged as he was due to be starting from the back without the application of any penalties.

What happened in the 2019 German Grand Prix?

The wet conditions required formation running behind the safety car before a standing start, reducing the scheduled 67 racing laps to 64. Lewis Hamilton launched cleanly, but Max Verstappen suffered wheelspin and lost ground. An early crash for Sergio Perez brought the safety car back out and prompted the switch from wet tyres to intermediates.

The track then became a test of judgement as much as speed. Drivers experimented with slicks while patches of standing water remained, and Max Verstappen survived a spin on medium tyres. Charles Leclerc had worked himself into contention when he slid off at the penultimate corner and hit the barriers.

Lewis Hamilton went off at the same corner soon afterwards, damaging his front wing. He reached the pits, but crossed the pit-entry bollard incorrectly and received a five-second penalty. A lengthy stop added to his difficulties, while Max Verstappen moved into a position from which he could control the race.

Nico Hülkenberg‘s hopes of a first podium ended in the barriers, and another change towards slick tyres created fresh opportunities. Lance Stroll‘s early switch briefly put Racing Point in the lead before Max Verstappen came through. Daniil Kvyat also timed his change well and moved into the podium fight.

Valtteri Bottas crashed while chasing Lance Stroll, bringing another safety car and giving Sebastian Vettel a final chance to attack. The Ferrari driver picked off the cars ahead to complete a remarkable climb from twentieth to second. Max Verstappen stayed clear to win, with Daniil Kvyat celebrating third and Toro Rosso‘s first podium since 2008.

Lance Stroll held fourth ahead of Carlos Sainz and Alexander Albon. The final order changed after Kimi Räikkönen and Antonio Giovinazzi received 30-second penalties for infringements relating to their start systems. Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen consequently took seventh and eighth, with Lewis Hamilton ninth and Robert Kubica tenth.

Max Verstappen added the fastest-lap point to his victory. Lewis Hamilton escaped a difficult afternoon with two points and a 41-point championship lead, while Robert Kubica‘s promotion delivered what would prove to be Williams‘ only point of the season. Hockenheim had produced a race in which very little stayed settled for long.

Max Verstappen earned the additional point for fastest lap.

Pierre Gasly was classified as he completed more than 90% of the race distance.
