Lewis Hamilton won the 2019 Canadian Grand Prix after a five-second penalty changed the result of his close contest with Sebastian Vettel. Vettel crossed the line first at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, but the official victory went to Hamilton after one of the season’s most debated incidents.

Championship background

Hamilton arrived in Montreal 17 points ahead of Valtteri Bottas. Mercedes had won every race so far, but the long straights and heavy braking zones offered Ferrari another opportunity to turn its straight-line speed into a first victory of the season.

Race entries

The regular 20 drivers contested the race. Nicholas Latifi made a home practice appearance for Williams in FP1, replacing Robert Kubica, before Kubica returned for the remainder of the weekend.

Free Practice

Lewis Hamilton led FP1 with a 1:12.767, followed by Valtteri Bottas and Charles Leclerc. Mercedes began strongly, but Ferrari‘s pace developed as the weekend progressed.

Leclerc topped FP2 with a 1:12.177, ahead of Sebastian Vettel and Bottas. Hamilton’s contact with the wall curtailed his running, leaving Mercedes with work to do before the final practice session.

Vettel led a Ferrari one-two in FP3, setting a 1:10.843 ahead of Leclerc. Hamilton was third, and the qualifying battle looked much closer than Mercedes‘ season-long winning record suggested.

Qualifying

Sebastian Vettel took pole with a 1:10.240, beating Lewis Hamilton by 0.206 seconds. Charles Leclerc was third, while Daniel Ricciardo produced an excellent lap to put Renault fourth on the grid.

Kevin Magnussen crashed at the final corner near the end of Q2, preventing Max Verstappen from completing a lap that might have carried him into Q3. Magnussen’s earlier time had been quick enough to progress, but repairs required a pit-lane start. Valtteri Bottas qualified sixth after an untidy final session.

Carlos Sainz received a three-place grid penalty for impeding Alexander Albon during qualifying.

Kevin Magnussen was required to start from the pit lane after having his chassis replaced due to a crash in qualifying. He also received a 15-place grid penalty: 10 places for his third Control Electronics (CE) and 5 places for an unscheduled gearbox change.

What happened in the 2019 Canadian Grand Prix?

Sebastian Vettel kept Lewis Hamilton behind at the start and controlled the early stages. Hamilton remained close enough to apply pressure, creating a direct contest between Ferrari and Mercedes as the race settled into its rhythm.

Alexander Albon lost his front wing in opening-lap contact and later retired his damaged Toro Rosso. McLaren also had a difficult afternoon: Carlos Sainz needed an early stop to clear a brake-duct blockage, while Lando Norris retired after overheating brakes damaged the rear suspension.

The leaders’ pit stops preserved Vettel’s advantage over Hamilton. Charles Leclerc ran longer before stopping and settled into third, while Valtteri Bottas worked past the Renaults after losing ground at the start.

The decisive incident came on lap 48. Vettel ran across the grass at Turns 3 and 4 and rejoined with Hamilton close behind. The stewards judged that the Ferrari had returned unsafely and forced Hamilton to take avoiding action, imposing a five-second penalty.

Vettel stayed ahead on the road but could not build the required five-second margin. Hamilton therefore became the official winner, with Vettel second and Leclerc third. Vettel strongly disputed the decision and moved the first- and second-place boards after the finish in a visible protest.

Bottas finished fourth and claimed fastest lap after a late tyre stop. Verstappen recovered to fifth, followed by Ricciardo and Nico Hülkenberg in a valuable double-points result for Renault. Pierre Gasly, Lance Stroll and Daniil Kvyat completed the top ten.

Ferrari later sought a review of the penalty, but the result remained unchanged. Hamilton extended his championship lead to 29 points, while Ferrari left with a double podium and the frustration of having crossed the finish line first without taking the win.
