Championship background

Charles Leclerc arrived after his breakthrough win in Belgium, while Lewis Hamilton held a 65-point lead over Valtteri Bottas in the 2019 F1 World Championship. Ferrari‘s straight-line speed made it a serious contender at its home race, although Mercedes remained close enough to threaten.

Race entries

The regular 20 drivers contested the weekend, with Alexander Albon continuing at Red Bull Racing and Pierre Gasly at Toro Rosso. Power-unit penalties affected the starting order, including Max Verstappen‘s prospects, while Antonio Giovinazzi prepared for his home race with Alfa Romeo Racing.

Free Practice

Charles Leclerc led a wet and interrupted FP1 in 1:27.905. Carlos Sainz and Lando Norris placed McLaren second and third as several incidents underlined the difficulty of the conditions.

Charles Leclerc was also fastest in FP2, this time with a 1:20.978. Lewis Hamilton finished only 0.068 seconds behind, with Sebastian Vettel third, suggesting Ferrari would face a much closer challenge than it had in Belgium.

Sebastian Vettel moved to the top in FP3 with a 1:20.294. Max Verstappen was just 0.032 seconds behind and Valtteri Bottas third as the teams completed their final preparations for qualifying.

Qualifying

Charles Leclerc took pole in 1:19.307, beating Lewis Hamilton by 0.039 seconds and Valtteri Bottas by 0.047. Sebastian Vettel was fourth, with Daniel Ricciardo and Nico Hülkenberg giving Renault an encouraging third-row pairing.

The session ended with a remarkable scramble for a slipstream. Drivers slowed before their final Q3 runs to avoid leading the queue, and most reached the line too late to begin another timed lap. Kimi Räikkönen had already crashed during Q3, while Max Verstappen recorded no qualifying time and faced a recovery drive from the back.

Kimi Räikkönen was required to start from the pit lane for changing power unit components under parc fermé conditions.

Lando Norris, Pierre Gasly and Sergio Perez were all demoted to the back of the grid for exceeding their quota for power unit components.

Max Verstappen was initially required to start from the back of the grid for exceeding his quota for power unit components, but failed to set a lap time during qualifying. He was allowed to race at the stewards’ discretion.

What happened in the 2019 Italian Grand Prix?

Charles Leclerc retained the lead from the start, with Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas close behind. Sebastian Vettel‘s afternoon soon went in the opposite direction: he spun at Ascari and made contact with Lance Stroll as he rejoined. Vettel received a ten-second stop-go penalty, while Stroll was also penalised for his own unsafe return to the track.

Lewis Hamilton stopped first among the leading pair and switched to medium tyres. Ferrari responded by putting Charles Leclerc onto hards, giving him a more durable tyre for the defence ahead. Hamilton closed in, turning the middle part of the race into a direct contest for the lead.

The fight became particularly tight at the second chicane, where Charles Leclerc‘s defence forced Lewis Hamilton onto the escape road. Leclerc received a black-and-white warning flag. A later trip across the first chicane’s run-off added another anxious moment, but he retained first place.

As Lewis Hamilton‘s tyres lost performance, Valtteri Bottas closed on the leading pair. Hamilton locked up into the first chicane and ran wide, allowing his team-mate through to second. Bottas then became the driver trying to prise the victory away from Ferrari.

Charles Leclerc held on through the closing laps and finished 0.835 seconds ahead of Valtteri Bottas. Lewis Hamilton stopped for fresh tyres, secured the fastest-lap point and finished third. Ferrari had its first Italian Grand Prix victory since Fernando Alonso‘s success in 2010, and the celebrations beneath the podium were enormous.

Daniel Ricciardo and Nico Hülkenberg delivered fourth and fifth for Renault, its strongest combined result of the season. Alexander Albon finished sixth, ahead of Sergio Perez and a recovering Max Verstappen. Antonio Giovinazzi scored at home in ninth, with Lando Norris completing the points after Carlos Sainz retired following a pit stop with a loose wheel.

The victory lifted Charles Leclerc ahead of Sebastian Vettel in the drivers’ standings. Lewis Hamilton still led the championship, now by 63 points over Valtteri Bottas, but the afternoon belonged to Ferrari‘s newest winner. Two victories in eight days had transformed Leclerc’s season.
