Championship background

Sebastian Vettel arrived at round 9 leading the 2011 F1 World Championship on 186 points, with Jenson Button on 109. Red Bull Racing headed the constructors’ standings with 295 points.

Race entries

Daniel Ricciardo made his Formula 1 race debut for HRT, replacing Narain Karthikeyan. The weekend also featured a temporary restriction on off-throttle exhaust blowing, adding a technical dispute to the sporting contest.

Free Practice

Wet FP1 conditions gradually allowed intermediate tyres, and Mark Webber set the fastest lap before stopping with a fuel problem. Rain returned late in the session and Kamui Kobayashi crashed heavily on the pit straight. Sauber faced a substantial repair job while the field lost the chance to gather dry-weather data.

Worse rain delayed meaningful FP2 running until almost halfway through the session. A drying line eventually encouraged more laps, with Felipe Massa quickest. Sauber completed its repairs in time for Kamui Kobayashi to return and finish third, recovering useful mileage after the accident that had ended his morning.

FP3 offered the driest conditions of the weekend despite an early shower, allowing overdue preparation for qualifying. Sebastian Vettel narrowly led Fernando Alonso while Mark Webber lost time to a technical problem. Michael Schumacher also faced floor trouble, and teams continued adapting amid the weekend’s changing interpretations of the blown-diffuser rules.

What happened in the 2011 British Grand Prix?

Vettel passed Webber at the start on a partly wet circuit. Hamilton gained places immediately, while the field remained on intermediates until the dry portions made a change to slicks worthwhile.

Alonso and Vettel stopped together later in the race, but a delay for Red Bull allowed the Ferrari into the lead. Vettel rejoined behind Hamilton, losing more time while Alonso pulled clear.

Button retired after leaving the pits with a wheel insecure. Vettel eventually regained second, with Webber close behind, while Hamilton had to conserve fuel and came under pressure from Massa.

Alonso won ahead of Vettel and Webber. Hamilton and Massa fought through the final corners, with Hamilton narrowly retaining fourth. Rosberg finished sixth, while Pérez earned a strong seventh for Sauber.

Further down the points places, Sergio Pérez, Nick Heidfeld, Michael Schumacher and Jaime Alguersuari completed the scoring positions. Fernando Alonso set the fastest lap, but no bonus point was awarded under the 2011 rules.

After the race, Sebastian Vettel headed the drivers’ standings with 204 points, followed by Mark Webber on 124. Red Bull Racing led the constructors’ table on 328, with McLaren on 218.
