Championship background

Sebastian Vettel arrived at round 11 leading the 2011 F1 World Championship on 216 points, with Mark Webber on 139. Red Bull Racing headed the constructors’ standings with 355 points.

Race entries

Jarno Trulli raced for Team Lotus, replacing Karun Chandhok. Bruno Senna, Nico Hulkenberg also took part in practice.

Free Practice

Lewis Hamilton carried his German Grand Prix momentum into FP1, while Mark Webber hit the inside barrier after running wide at Turn 9. The slippery surface also contributed to understeer complaints from Michael Schumacher. Bruno Senna took Nick Heidfeld’s Renault for the session, gaining experience ahead of his later return to a race seat.

Lewis Hamilton remained quickest in FP2, with Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button reinforcing the challenge to Red Bull. Mark Webber returned after repairs, but neither Red Bull driver looked entirely comfortable with the car’s performance. The team subsequently chose to break its overnight working curfew to make changes before Saturday’s final practice.

Red Bull’s overnight work brought an immediate improvement as Sebastian Vettel led FP3. Fernando Alonso remained close enough to keep Ferrari in contention, while Jenson Button was the quicker McLaren this time. Lewis Hamilton’s lower position offered a contrast to his Friday pace, leaving the qualifying contest less clear-cut than the times alone suggested.

Sébastien Buemi was demoted five grid places for causing an avoidable collision with Nick Heidfeld at the German Grand Prix.

What happened in the 2011 Hungarian Grand Prix?

The field started on intermediates, with Vettel initially leading. Hamilton applied immediate pressure and moved ahead when Vettel ran wide, while Button soon emerged as his team-mate’s closest challenger.

The switch to dry tyres brought Button into contention. Hamilton later spun on the slippery circuit, and his attempt to rejoin across the track forced Paul di Resta to take avoiding action, earning a drive-through penalty.

Another shower split the strategies. Hamilton changed to intermediates, but Button stayed on slicks and judged the conditions correctly as the rain eased. Nick Heidfeld‘s Renault had meanwhile caught fire after a pit stop, ending his race.

Button took the win ahead of Vettel and Alonso, with Hamilton recovering fourth. Webber and Massa completed the top six, while di Resta earned seventh. Vettel left Hungary with an even stronger championship advantage.

Further down the points places, Paul di Resta, Sébastien Buemi, Nico Rosberg and Jaime Alguersuari completed the scoring positions. Felipe Massa set the fastest lap, but no bonus point was awarded under the 2011 rules.

After the race, Sebastian Vettel headed the drivers’ standings with 234 points, followed by Mark Webber on 149. Red Bull Racing led the constructors’ table on 383, with McLaren on 280.
