Championship background

Nico Rosberg arrived at round 2 leading the 2014 F1 World Championship on 25 points, with Kevin Magnussen on 18. McLaren headed the constructors’ standings with 33 points.

Race entries

The 11 teams kept the same race line-ups for the Malaysian Grand Prix.

Free Practice

Lewis Hamilton led FP1 as the field struggled for rear grip in the heat. Lotus again lost running, with Romain Grosjean stopping and Pastor Maldonado returning to the pits trailing smoke. Kevin Magnussen also lost power near the pit entry, while fuel-system trouble delayed Sergio Perez’s programme at Force India.

Nico Rosberg narrowly led Kimi Räikkönen and Sebastian Vettel in hot FP2 conditions before attention shifted to tyre wear and fuel-saving runs. Lotus’s difficulties continued: Romain Grosjean suffered repeated gearbox trouble and Pastor Maldonado did not run. Kamui Kobayashi was also sidelined by an energy-store problem, limiting Caterham’s preparation for the race.

Mercedes established a clearer advantage in FP3, with Nico Rosberg ahead of Lewis Hamilton once the medium tyres were fitted. McLaren completed little running and neither driver recorded a time. Romain Grosjean continued to report poor rear-end behaviour and a lack of power, leaving Lotus with substantial work before qualifying.

Valtteri Bottas was given a three-place grid penalty for impeding Daniel Ricciardo during qualifying.

What happened in the 2014 Malaysian Grand Prix?

Hamilton led away cleanly, and Rosberg moved into second ahead of Vettel. Sergio Pérez failed to start because of a gearbox problem, while early contact and punctures disrupted several other drivers, including Kimi Räikkönen.

The Mercedes pair established a decisive advantage. Nico Hülkenberg used a two-stop strategy to fight Fernando Alonso, who eventually made his fresher tyres count in the contest for fourth.

Daniel Ricciardo‘s race unravelled when he was released from a stop with a wheel insecure. He later suffered front-wing damage and retired, losing a strong position and receiving a penalty for the next race.

Hamilton won ahead of Rosberg and Vettel, with Alonso fourth and Hülkenberg fifth. Jenson Button held off Felipe Massa and Bottas for sixth, while both Caterhams reached the finish further down the order.

Further down the points places, Felipe Massa, Valtteri Bottas, Kevin Magnussen and Daniil Kvyat completed the scoring positions. Lewis Hamilton set the fastest lap, but no bonus point was awarded under the 2014 rules.

After the race, Nico Rosberg headed the drivers’ standings with 43 points, followed by Lewis Hamilton on 25. Mercedes led the constructors’ table on 68, with McLaren on 43.
