Championship background

Lewis Hamilton arrived at round 17 leading the 2014 F1 World Championship on 291 points, with Nico Rosberg on 274. Mercedes headed the constructors’ standings with 565 points.

Race entries

Caterham and Marussia both missed the event because of financial difficulties, leaving eighteen cars. The qualifying elimination numbers were adjusted to retain ten drivers in Q3.

Free Practice

Lewis Hamilton led FP1 as a damp track gradually dried, but a gearshift problem ended his running early. Daniel Ricciardo also lost much of the session to an energy-recovery failure. The interruptions limited two front-running teams’ opening programmes as reserve drivers gained mileage on the improving Austin surface.

Strong crosswinds complicated FP2 setup work, with Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg closely matched despite technical concerns on both Mercedes cars. Lewis Hamilton stopped early with a minor hydraulic issue, while Felipe Massa spun and the Lotus drivers repeatedly used the run-off areas. Those difficulties made the longer runs less straightforward than the leading times suggested.

Lewis Hamilton led a chilly FP3 while Nico Rosberg worked through brake trouble that compromised his final sector. Both Mercedes drivers had excursions, including Lewis Hamilton spinning under braking after changing a steering-wheel setting. Jean-Eric Vergne’s engine cut out and ended his session early, leaving Toro Rosso with work before qualifying.

Qualifying

Nico Rosberg headed qualifying for Mercedes, with Lewis Hamilton second and Valtteri Bottas third.

Nico Rosberg took pole ahead of Lewis Hamilton. Caterham and Marussia‘s absence reduced Q1 and Q2 eliminations to four cars each. Sebastian Vettel faced a pit-lane start after exceeding his power-unit component allowance.

Jenson Button dropped five places on the starting grid due to a gearbox change to his McLaren.

Daniil Kvyat was demoted ten places on the starting grid due to an engine change to his Toro Rosso.

Sebastian Vettel was required to start the race from pit lane after being penalised for exceeding the season limit of five power unit component changes, by changing a sixth on his Red Bull prior to qualifying.

What happened in the 2014 United States Grand Prix?

Rosberg kept the lead at the start, while Felipe Massa passed Valtteri Bottas. Sergio Pérez collided with Adrian Sutil after contact with Kimi Räikkönen, eliminating the Force India and Sauber and bringing out the safety car.

Hamilton stayed close to Rosberg after the restart and through the first stops. He then attacked at Turn 12, taking the lead on track and beginning to establish a winning advantage.

Ricciardo recovered from a poor start and used his pit-stop strategy effectively against Williams. He moved ahead of both Massa and Bottas to secure third behind the two Mercedes cars.

Hamilton won for the fifth consecutive race, with Rosberg second and Ricciardo third. Massa and Bottas completed the top five, while Alonso took sixth. Hamilton’s title lead increased to 24 points with two races remaining.

Further down the points places, Sebastian Vettel, Kevin Magnussen, Pastor Maldonado and Jean-Éric Vergne completed the scoring positions. Sebastian Vettel set the fastest lap, but no bonus point was awarded under the 2014 rules.

After the race, Lewis Hamilton headed the drivers’ standings with 316 points, followed by Nico Rosberg on 292. Mercedes led the constructors’ table on 608, with Red Bull Racing on 363.
