Championship background

Nico Rosberg arrived at round 5 leading the 2014 F1 World Championship on 79 points, with Lewis Hamilton on 75. Mercedes headed the constructors’ standings with 154 points.

Race entries

The 11 teams kept the same race line-ups for the Spanish Grand Prix. Felipe Nasr, Giedo van der Garde also took part in practice.

Free Practice

Lewis Hamilton led FP1 while Sebastian Vettel stopped with a damaged wiring loom, a problem serious enough to rule him out of the afternoon session too. Van der Garde survived a brake failure without hitting the barrier. Adrian Sutil also ran wide, and Sergio Perez’s mirror came loose during an eventful opening practice.

Lewis Hamilton remained ahead in FP2 as Mercedes strengthened its advantage. Max Chilton lost bodywork and later became stranded in the gravel, while Jean-Eric Vergne’s rear wheel detached after an unsafe release. The incident brought a substantial grid penalty and a team fine, complicating Toro Rosso’s weekend before qualifying began.

Nico Rosberg led FP3 as teams examined hard-tyre degradation before their quicker medium-compound runs. Several drivers struggled for rear grip, and Max Chilton again ended up in the gravel after a lock-up. Sebastian Vettel returned to action following Friday’s electrical repairs, but with far less preparation than his rivals.

Sebastian Vettel was given a five place grid penalty for an unscheduled gearbox change after qualifying.

Jean-Éric Vergne was given a ten place grid penalty for an unsafe pit lane release in the second practice session.

Pastor Maldonado failed to set a lap time during qualifying. He was allowed to participate in the race after a dispensation from the race stewards.

What happened in the 2014 Spanish Grand Prix?

Hamilton led away, while Valtteri Bottas passed Ricciardo for third. The Mercedes drivers pulled clear as the Red Bull waited for an opportunity to overcome the Williams through the pit-stop sequence.

Hamilton and Rosberg followed different tyre choices for the final stint. Rosberg’s softer tyres helped him close rapidly towards the finish, turning a controlled Mercedes race into a tense contest between the team-mates.

Hamilton kept Rosberg behind to secure a fourth consecutive victory. Ricciardo finished third after gaining the advantage over Bottas, while Vettel used a three-stop strategy to recover from fifteenth on the grid.

Vettel took fourth ahead of Bottas and set the fastest lap. Fernando Alonso passed Kimi Räikkönen late to finish sixth at home, while Romain Grosjean scored Lotus‘ first points of the season in eighth.

Further down the points places, Kimi Räikkönen, Romain Grosjean, Sergio Pérez and Nico Hülkenberg completed the scoring positions. Sebastian Vettel set the fastest lap, but no bonus point was awarded under the 2014 rules.

After the race, Lewis Hamilton headed the drivers’ standings with 100 points, followed by Nico Rosberg on 97. Mercedes led the constructors’ table on 197, with Red Bull Racing on 84.
