Championship background
Lewis Hamilton arrived at round 18 leading the 2014 F1 World Championship on 316 points, with Nico Rosberg on 292. Mercedes headed the constructors’ standings with 608 points.
Race entries
The 9 teams kept the same race line-ups for the Brazilian Grand Prix. Daniel Juncadella, Felipe Nasr, Max Verstappen also took part in practice.
Free Practice
Nico Rosberg led FP1 as drivers struggled for grip on the resurfaced track. Daniel Juncadella crashed the Force India, with the resulting repairs also costing Sergio Perez the afternoon session. Jenson Button stopped with an energy-recovery failure, and electrical trouble prevented Esteban Gutiérrez from recording a time, leaving several programmes incomplete.
Nico Rosberg stayed quickest in FP2, but three stoppages disrupted preparation. Jean-Eric Vergne lost power, Fernando Alonso’s engine caught fire, and Esteban Gutiérrez stopped with an energy-recovery problem. Fernando Alonso helped tackle the flames before marshals reached him, while the interruptions repeatedly broke up teams’ planned tyre and race-simulation work.
Nico Rosberg completed a practice clean sweep in dry but overcast FP3 conditions. Lewis Hamilton spun under braking for the Senna S and later encountered traffic on a quick lap. Williams emerged as the closest challenger, with Felipe Massa giving the home supporters encouragement as teams completed their soft-tyre qualifying preparations.

What happened in the 2014 Brazilian Grand Prix?
Rosberg held the lead from Hamilton, with Massa third. Tyre degradation quickly brought the first stops, and Massa received a five-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane.
Hamilton tried to use an extended stint to gain an advantage over Rosberg, but spun while pushing before his next stop. The lost time proved crucial, even though he subsequently closed the gap again.
Rosberg managed the final stint with Hamilton close behind and reached the flag first. Massa retained third despite stopping briefly at the wrong pit box during one visit to the pits.
Jenson Button finished fourth ahead of Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso. Rosberg reduced Hamilton’s lead to seventeen points, setting up a final-round title contest at Abu Dhabi, where double points would be awarded.
Further down the points places, Kimi Räikkönen, Nico Hülkenberg, Kevin Magnussen and Valtteri Bottas completed the scoring positions. Lewis Hamilton set the fastest lap, but no bonus point was awarded under the 2014 rules.
After the race, Lewis Hamilton headed the drivers’ standings with 334 points, followed by Nico Rosberg on 317. Mercedes led the constructors’ table on 651, with Red Bull Racing on 373.
