Championship background

Nico Rosberg arrived at round 12 leading the 2014 F1 World Championship on 202 points, with Lewis Hamilton on 191. Mercedes headed the constructors’ standings with 393 points.

Race entries

André Lotterer replaced Kamui Kobayashi at Caterham for this race, joining Marcus Ericsson. The experienced endurance racer was making his Formula 1 debut.

Free Practice

Nico Rosberg led FP1 as several front-running teams encountered technical problems. Fernando Alonso briefly stopped with engine trouble, Kimi Räikkönen’s energy-recovery system overheated, and Jenson Button’s DRS stuck open. Sebastian Vettel suffered an exhaust-related failure that ended his running early, leaving Red Bull facing repairs rather than a full practice programme.

Lewis Hamilton led FP2, but two stoppages disrupted preparation. Pastor Maldonado crossed the grass and crashed heavily on the approach to Pouhon, escaping injury, before a gearbox fault left Esteban Gutiérrez stranded near Blanchimont. Sebastian Vettel’s earlier failure required further engine work, adding to Red Bull’s difficult start to the weekend.

Overnight rain left FP3 damp, with little activity during the opening half-hour. Teams moved through wet-weather tyres before fitting slicks as the circuit improved. Valtteri Bottas produced the fastest late lap, but the changing surface made comparisons less straightforward than in a fully dry qualifying rehearsal.

What happened in the 2014 Belgian Grand Prix?

Hamilton took the lead at the start, but Rosberg attacked at Les Combes on the second lap. Contact between Rosberg’s front wing and Hamilton’s rear tyre caused a puncture for Hamilton and damaged the championship leader’s wing.

Ricciardo passed Fernando Alonso and then Vettel to move into contention. As Rosberg lost time replacing his damaged wing, the Australian gained the advantage and built the foundation for his third victory of the season.

Rosberg used fresher tyres to chase Ricciardo in the final stint but could not close enough before the flag. Hamilton, running well down the order with damage, eventually retired rather than continue a fruitless recovery.

Bottas finished third ahead of Kimi Räikkönen and Vettel. Kevin Magnussen‘s penalty for forcing Alonso off the track dropped him out of the points and promoted Jenson Button to sixth. Ricciardo’s win intensified scrutiny of the Mercedes rivalry.

Further down the points places, Fernando Alonso, Sergio Pérez, Daniil Kvyat and Nico Hülkenberg completed the scoring positions. Nico Rosberg set the fastest lap, but no bonus point was awarded under the 2014 rules.

After the race, Nico Rosberg headed the drivers’ standings with 220 points, followed by Lewis Hamilton on 191. Mercedes led the constructors’ table on 411, with Red Bull Racing on 254.
