Championship background

Nico Rosberg arrived at round 10 leading the 2014 F1 World Championship on 165 points, with Lewis Hamilton on 161. Mercedes headed the constructors’ standings with 326 points.

Race entries

The 11 teams kept the same race line-ups for the German Grand Prix. Giedo van der Garde, Susie Wolff also took part in practice.

Free Practice

Nico Rosberg led FP1 after teams removed their FRIC suspension systems in response to the FIA’s legality concerns. Susie Wolff overcame an early gearshift problem to complete a useful Williams outing. Kimi Räikkönen lost time to a water-pump issue before returning, while Mercedes showed no obvious loss of its leading pace.

Lewis Hamilton narrowly led FP2 on an extremely hot track, with Daniel Ricciardo close enough to encourage Red Bull. Caterham had a difficult session: Marcus Ericsson stopped with an engine problem and Kamui Kobayashi’s car caught fire. Longer runs became important as teams assessed tyre wear in the demanding temperatures.

Nico Rosberg opened a larger advantage in FP3 as teams switched from soft-tyre work to late supersoft qualifying simulations. Fernando Alonso recovered from a spin to lead the chasing pack, while Williams again looked competitive. McLaren’s upgraded car also showed promise, giving the midfield battle added interest before qualifying.

Qualifying

Nico Rosberg headed qualifying for Mercedes, with Valtteri Bottas second and Felipe Massa third.

A brake-disc failure sent Lewis Hamilton into the barriers during Q1. A subsequent gearbox penalty left him twentieth on the grid, while Nico Rosberg took pole ahead of Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa.

Esteban Gutiérrez received a three place grid penalty as a result of an accident with Pastor Maldonado in the previous British Grand Prix.

Lewis Hamilton received a five-place grid penalty for a gearbox change.

Marcus Ericsson failed to set a lap time in Q1. He was later penalised with having to start from the pit lane and having to serve a 10-second stop and go penalty within the first three laps of the race, because his team failed to cover and seal his car before curfew and therefore breached Parc Fermé regulations.

What happened in the 2014 German Grand Prix?

Rosberg led away, but Massa’s Williams was tipped over after contact with Kevin Magnussen at the first corner. Massa retired, while Magnussen continued and Daniel Ricciardo lost ground avoiding the incident.

Hamilton moved quickly through the field, including a double pass involving Ricciardo and Kimi Räikkönen. Contact with Jenson Button later damaged his front wing and increased tyre wear, pushing Mercedes towards a three-stop strategy.

Rosberg remained clear at the front. Hamilton’s final stop left him chasing Bottas on softer tyres, but the Williams driver’s straight-line speed and clean defence kept second place secure.

Rosberg won ahead of Bottas and Hamilton, with Vettel fourth. Fernando Alonso narrowly beat Ricciardo after their own lively battle, while Nico Hülkenberg finished seventh. Rosberg extended his championship lead to fourteen points.

Further down the points places, Nico Hülkenberg, Jenson Button, Kevin Magnussen and Sergio Pérez completed the scoring positions. Lewis Hamilton set the fastest lap, but no bonus point was awarded under the 2014 rules.

After the race, Nico Rosberg headed the drivers’ standings with 190 points, followed by Lewis Hamilton on 176. Mercedes led the constructors’ table on 366, with Red Bull Racing on 188.
