Championship background

Nico Rosberg arrived at round 13 leading the 2014 F1 World Championship on 220 points, with Lewis Hamilton on 191. Mercedes headed the constructors’ standings with 411 points.

Race entries

Kamui Kobayashi raced for Caterham, replacing André Lotterer. Charles Pic, Daniel Juncadella, Giedo van der Garde, Roberto Merhi also took part in practice.

Free Practice

Lewis Hamilton led a sunny FP1 as drivers adjusted to low-downforce setups and found the hard tyres slower than expected to warm up. Daniel Ricciardo lost running to DRS and suspected energy-recovery trouble. Kevin Magnussen also reported rear-braking problems, while several drivers used the run-off areas during their early laps.

Nico Rosberg led FP2, but Lewis Hamilton came close despite missing the opening hour while Mercedes repaired an electrical fault. Lotus struggled with tyre temperature, braking stability and steering, making its afternoon especially difficult. Traffic and excursions further complicated the longer runs as teams assessed Monza’s specialised setup demands.

Lewis Hamilton led FP3 while Nico Rosberg’s gearbox problems restricted him to three laps and no time, denying him a qualifying simulation. Sergio Perez also stopped on track. Fernando Alonso and Williams showed encouraging pace as others completed their medium-tyre runs, leaving Mercedes with repairs to finish before the afternoon.

Daniil Kvyat was given a ten-place grid penalty for using his sixth engine of the season.

What happened in the 2014 Italian Grand Prix?

Hamilton dropped to fourth at the start as Rosberg took the lead, followed by Kevin Magnussen and Massa. Bottas also lost ground, setting up recovery drives for both front-row teams.

Hamilton passed Magnussen and Massa before closing on Rosberg. The leader had already missed the first chicane once, and another lock-up under pressure sent him through the escape road, allowing Hamilton into the lead.

Hamilton pulled clear to secure victory, while Rosberg retained second. Fernando Alonso retired with a technical failure, ending Ferrari‘s hopes of a strong home result as Räikkönen ran further down the order.

Massa claimed third, his first podium for Williams, ahead of the recovering Bottas. Ricciardo used his later tyre stop to attack and pass Vettel for fifth. Hamilton reduced Rosberg’s championship lead to 22 points.

Further down the points places, Sergio Pérez, Jenson Button, Kimi Räikkönen and Kevin Magnussen completed the scoring positions. Lewis Hamilton set the fastest lap, but no bonus point was awarded under the 2014 rules.

After the race, Nico Rosberg headed the drivers’ standings with 238 points, followed by Lewis Hamilton on 216. Mercedes led the constructors’ table on 454, with Red Bull Racing on 272.
