Championship background

Jenson Button arrived at round 5 leading the 2010 F1 World Championship on 60 points, with Nico Rosberg on 50. McLaren headed the constructors’ standings with 109 points.

Race entries

The 12 teams kept the same race line-ups for the Spanish Grand Prix. Christian Klien, Paul di Resta also took part in practice.

Free Practice

Lewis Hamilton led a McLaren one-two in a largely straightforward FP1. Michael Schumacher showed renewed confidence in Mercedes’ updated car and finished third, offering encouragement after a difficult start to his comeback. Pedro de la Rosa had a less productive morning, losing running to a gearbox failure at his home event.

Red Bull took over in FP2, with Sebastian Vettel ahead of Mark Webber, while Michael Schumacher again featured near the front. Nico Hülkenberg hit the wall after running wide at Campsa and lost his front wing. Jaime Alguersuari also stopped late on, adding to the work facing teams before Saturday’s final preparations.

Standing water at Repsol caught out both Vitaly Petrov and Kamui Kobayashi in FP3. Kamui Kobayashi escaped without damage, but Vitaly Petrov crashed and needed a replacement gearbox, earning a grid penalty. The incident left Renault with repairs to complete while Red Bull continued preparing for a qualifying session it would enter as the favourite.

What happened in the 2010 Spanish Grand Prix?

Webber kept the lead into the first corner, with Vettel holding Hamilton and Alonso behind. The front-runners gradually separated from the pack as the race settled into its opening stint.

Hamilton moved ahead of Vettel during the stops, while Schumacher gained track position over Button. The McLaren driver spent the remainder of the afternoon searching unsuccessfully for a way past the Mercedes.

Vettel ran wide with brake trouble and stopped again, falling behind Alonso. Hamilton then suffered a left-front tyre failure on the penultimate lap and hit the barriers, losing a likely second place.

Webber won ahead of Alonso and Vettel. Schumacher held fourth from Button, with Massa sixth. Button retained the championship lead, but the margins between the leading teams and drivers continued to tighten.

Further down the points places, Adrian Sutil, Robert Kubica, Rubens Barrichello and Jaime Alguersuari completed the scoring positions. Lewis Hamilton set the fastest lap, but no bonus point was awarded under the 2010 rules.

After the race, Jenson Button headed the drivers’ standings with 70 points, followed by Fernando Alonso on 67. McLaren led the constructors’ table on 119, with Ferrari on 116.
