Championship background

Mark Webber arrived at round 13 leading the 2010 F1 World Championship on 161 points, with Lewis Hamilton on 157. Red Bull Racing headed the constructors’ standings with 312 points.

Race entries

The 12 teams kept the same race line-ups for the Belgian Grand Prix.

Free Practice

Heavy rain made FP1 a wet-weather exercise, with conditions worsening enough for some drivers to aquaplane before easing late on. Fernando Alonso led, but dry-race preparation was impossible. The changing intensity rewarded careful timing of runs as teams assessed grip around Spa’s long, varied lap.

The track gradually dried in FP2, allowing a switch to slicks, but useful running was limited by a late safety stoppage. Fernando Alonso remained fastest. Vitantonio Liuzzi needed a new front wing after losing control, while Timo Glock crashed after sliding on a white line, illustrating the danger of lingering damp patches.

FP3 again began damp before slick tyres became viable, only for another downpour to arrive near the end. Mark Webber made the most of the dry window to lead. Sebastian Vettel stopped at the pit entry with his car stuck in gear, and marshals helped return it for Red Bull to investigate.

Nico Rosberg received a five-place grid penalty for a gearbox change before qualifying.

Sébastien Buemi was imposed a three-place grid penalty for blocking another driver during the second qualifying session.

Pedro de la Rosa was demoted ten places for his ninth engine switch of the season.

Vitaly Petrov set no qualifying lap time after crashing during the first session.

What happened in the 2010 Belgian Grand Prix?

Hamilton took the lead as Webber’s slow start dropped the Red Bull backwards. Rain at the end of the opening lap sent several cars wide, and Barrichello hit Alonso before retiring.

Vettel lost control while attempting to pass Button and struck the McLaren, ending Button’s race. Vettel continued after repairs and a penalty, but finished outside the points.

A later shower caught Hamilton out at Rivage, where he ran through the gravel but retained the lead. Kubica overshot his pit box during the change to intermediates, allowing Webber into second, while Alonso crashed and brought out another safety car.

Hamilton held on after the restart to win ahead of Webber and Kubica. Massa finished fourth and Sutil fifth, while both Mercedes recovered into the points. Hamilton regained the championship lead.

Further down the points places, Michael Schumacher, Kamui Kobayashi, Vitaly Petrov and Vitantonio Liuzzi completed the scoring positions. Lewis Hamilton set the fastest lap, but no bonus point was awarded under the 2010 rules.

After the race, Lewis Hamilton headed the drivers’ standings with 182 points, followed by Mark Webber on 179. Red Bull Racing led the constructors’ table on 330, with McLaren on 329.
