Championship background

Lewis Hamilton arrived at round 11 leading the 2010 F1 World Championship on 145 points, with Jenson Button on 133. McLaren headed the constructors’ standings with 278 points.

Race entries

Bruno Senna returned to HRT, with Sakon Yamamoto remaining in the second car in place of Karun Chandhok.

Free Practice

Wet conditions prevented meaningful dry-tyre work in FP1 as teams moved from full wets towards intermediates. Adrian Sutil finished fastest, while several drivers spun in standing water. Lewis Hamilton suffered the most costly moment, sliding into the barriers and heavily damaging his McLaren as grip levels changed around the circuit.

A mostly dry FP2 allowed teams to recover some lost preparation, with Fernando Alonso leading on supersoft tyres and Red Bull close behind. Lewis Hamilton returned after repairs, while Nico Rosberg damaged his front wing against a kerb bollard. The improved conditions finally gave engineers useful information on their dry-weather setups.

Another shower left FP3 starting on intermediates before the track became dry enough for slicks and qualifying preparation. Sebastian Vettel led Fernando Alonso in the improving conditions. Adrian Sutil missed much of the hour after a driveshaft failure, leaving the Force India driver without a timed lap despite his strong start on Friday.

Timo Glock was given two five-place grid penalties for a gearbox change, and for fitting a seventh-gear ratio that was not declared on Friday.

What happened in the 2010 German Grand Prix?

Massa swept around Vettel and Alonso at the start to take the lead. Alonso also passed the slow-starting Red Bull, putting Ferrari into the first two positions while Hamilton moved ahead of Webber.

The Ferraris remained in front through the stops. Alonso applied pressure to Massa, but the Brazilian initially held him off as Vettel followed in third.

After a radio message telling Massa that Alonso was faster, Massa slowed on the exit of the hairpin and Alonso moved ahead. The stewards judged Ferrari to have breached the regulations prohibiting team orders that interfered with the result.

Alonso won ahead of Massa and Vettel, with Hamilton fourth and Button fifth. Ferrari received a US$100,000 fine and a referral to the World Motor Sport Council, but the race classification stood.

Further down the points places, Robert Kubica, Nico Rosberg, Michael Schumacher and Vitaly Petrov completed the scoring positions. Sebastian Vettel set the fastest lap, but no bonus point was awarded under the 2010 rules.

After the race, Lewis Hamilton headed the drivers’ standings with 157 points, followed by Jenson Button on 143. McLaren led the constructors’ table on 300, with Red Bull Racing on 272.

Ferrari were called before the Race Stewards after the race, and were found guilty of breaching Article 39.1 of the FIA Sporting Regulations, in relation to team orders and Article 151c of the FIA International Sporting Code for bringing the sport into disrepute. The result stood, although Ferrari were fined US$ 100,000 and the matter was referred to the FIA World Motor Sport Council.
