Championship background

Mark Webber arrived at round 15 leading the 2010 F1 World Championship on 187 points, with Lewis Hamilton on 182. Red Bull Racing headed the constructors’ standings with 350 points.

Race entries

Nick Heidfeld replaced Pedro de la Rosa at Sauber. Christian Klien substituted for Sakon Yamamoto at HRT for the Singapore weekend.

Free Practice

Standing water and humidity slowed the track’s drying during FP1, keeping drivers on intermediates until late in the session. Mark Webber went quickest as slicks finally became usable. The delayed transition limited representative running and made the final minutes particularly important for teams trying to assess their cars in dry conditions.

Sebastian Vettel led FP2, but damp patches still caught drivers out. Fernando Alonso stalled after running down an escape road, while Adrian Sutil launched over the Singapore Sling kerb and broke his front-left suspension on landing. The Force India driver also received a fine for attempting to continue with the damaged car.

More rain before FP3 left different parts of the circuit drying at different rates, complicating the move from intermediates to supersofts. Sebastian Vettel again set the pace. Bruno Senna spun at the Singapore Sling and later brushed a wall, with the resulting late yellow flags preventing others from improving their final laps.

Nico Hülkenberg was given a five-place grid penalty for changing his gearbox after the Italian Grand Prix.

Felipe Massa failed to set a lap time after stopping on the circuit in the first part of the qualifying session.

Ferrari replaced Massa’s gearbox and engine – his ninth for the season – after his stoppage in qualifying; Massa could not be penalised (15 place penalty) because he had already qualified last after failing to set a time.

What happened in the 2010 Singapore Grand Prix?

Alonso defended the lead from Vettel at the start. An early safety car gave Webber the opportunity to stop, leaving the championship leader to work through traffic on a different strategy.

Alonso and Vettel stayed close through their stops. After another safety-car period, Hamilton tried to pass Webber, but the cars touched and Hamilton retired with damage while Webber continued.

Kubica recovered from a puncture with a series of overtaking moves on fresh tyres. Near the finish, Kovalainen stopped his burning Lotus on the main straight and helped extinguish the flames himself.

Alonso resisted Vettel’s final challenge to win by less than three tenths of a second. Webber held third from Button, with Rosberg fifth. Alonso moved into second in the championship, eleven points behind Webber.

Further down the points places, Robert Kubica, Felipe Massa, Adrian Sutil and Nico Hülkenberg completed the scoring positions. Fernando Alonso set the fastest lap, but no bonus point was awarded under the 2010 rules.

After the race, Mark Webber headed the drivers’ standings with 202 points, followed by Fernando Alonso on 191. Red Bull Racing led the constructors’ table on 383, with McLaren on 359.
