Championship background

Lewis Hamilton arrived at round 12 leading the 2010 F1 World Championship on 157 points, with Jenson Button on 143. McLaren headed the constructors’ standings with 300 points.

Race entries

The 12 teams kept the same race line-ups for the Hungarian Grand Prix. Paul di Resta also took part in practice.

Free Practice

Red Bull opened FP1 with a commanding advantage on the dusty Hungaroring. Lewis Hamilton struggled with a technical problem and poor balance, while Vitaly Petrov spun at the final corner. Force India also incurred a fine after reserve driver Paul di Resta used tyres allocated for Vitantonio Liuzzi’s Saturday running.

Sebastian Vettel stayed quickest in FP2, although Fernando Alonso reduced Ferrari’s deficit and Vitaly Petrov impressed ahead of Robert Kubica. Lewis Hamilton found a more comfortable setup after his troubled morning. Heikki Kovalainen lost much of the session to hydraulic problems, while Adrian Sutil faced an electrical fault and several drivers explored the run-off areas.

Mark Webber led FP3 after finding a more effective setup for the supersoft tyres. Understeer had held him back on Friday, but the revised balance helped him improve substantially as Red Bull continued to look strong. Ferrari remained the nearest challenger, leaving the other leading teams searching for an answer before qualifying.

Kamui Kobayashi was given a five-place grid penalty for going through a red light in the pitlane at the end of Q1.

What happened in the 2010 Hungarian Grand Prix?

Vettel led from the start, but Alonso passed Webber for second. Debris from Liuzzi’s front wing brought out the safety car, prompting most of the leaders to stop while Webber stayed on track.

The pit lane became chaotic: Rosberg lost a wheel after leaving his box, and Kubica was released into Sutil’s path. Vettel then received a drive-through penalty for dropping more than ten car lengths behind the safety car.

Webber built enough of a lead to make his later stop and remain ahead of Alonso. Hamilton retired with a gearbox problem, while Vettel could not find a way past the Ferrari.

Webber won ahead of Alonso, Vettel and Massa. Petrov and Hülkenberg achieved their best finishes to that point in fifth and sixth. Barrichello passed Schumacher for tenth despite being squeezed towards the pit wall, an incident that earned Schumacher a grid penalty for Belgium.

Further down the points places, Pedro de la Rosa, Jenson Button, Kamui Kobayashi and Rubens Barrichello completed the scoring positions. Sebastian Vettel set the fastest lap, but no bonus point was awarded under the 2010 rules.

After the race, Mark Webber headed the drivers’ standings with 161 points, followed by Lewis Hamilton on 157. Red Bull Racing led the constructors’ table on 312, with McLaren on 304.
