Championship background

Lewis Hamilton arrived at round 19 leading the 2014 F1 World Championship on 334 points, with Nico Rosberg on 317. Mercedes headed the constructors’ standings with 651 points.

Race entries

Caterham returned after missing two races, with Will Stevens making his debut alongside Kamui Kobayashi. Marussia remained absent, leaving twenty cars and five eliminations in both Q1 and Q2.

Free Practice

Lewis Hamilton led FP1 as Caterham returned with debutant Will Stevens, who lost much of the session before finally building mileage. Williams also encountered problems, including bodywork coming loose from Felipe Massa’s car. Esteban Ocon and Adderly Fong received practice outings while Mercedes established a substantial early advantage.

Lewis Hamilton narrowly led Nico Rosberg in FP2, but Fernando Alonso stopped after only two laps, costing Ferrari its most representative evening preparation. Will Stevens completed a much more useful Caterham programme as teams switched to longer runs. The FIA also trialled its virtual safety car procedure after the session ended.

Nico Rosberg reversed the Mercedes order in FP3 while Fernando Alonso again lost running, this time after only eight laps. Ferrari had sent him out early on supersofts to recover Friday’s missed work before the problem intervened. Others saved qualifying simulations for the closing stages, with Mercedes still comfortably clear.

Romain Grosjean qualified in sixteenth but was demoted four grid places as part of twenty-place penalty for using his sixth power unit of the season.

Daniel Ricciardo and Sebastian Vettel originally qualified in fifth and sixth respectively, but were excluded from the qualifying results and were relegated to the back of the grid for illegal front wings.

What happened in the 2014 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix?

Hamilton made the stronger start and took the lead into the first corner. Rosberg stayed close during the opening phase, but his title hopes began to unravel when the Mercedes lost energy-recovery performance.

As Rosberg dropped down the field, Hamilton reduced the strain on his own car. Massa extended his strategy and used fresh supersoft tyres for a late pursuit, steadily cutting the leader’s advantage.

Hamilton increased his pace enough to protect the win, finishing ahead of Massa and Bottas. Daniel Ricciardo recovered from the pit lane to fourth, while Rosberg chose to finish despite being advised that retirement was possible.

The one-off double-points finale awarded Hamilton fifty points for victory and confirmed his second drivers’ title. Rosberg finished fourteenth, outside the points, while Williams‘ double podium rounded off a strong season for the team.

Further down the points places, Sergio Pérez, Sebastian Vettel, Fernando Alonso and Kimi Räikkönen completed the scoring positions. Daniel Ricciardo set the fastest lap, but no bonus point was awarded under the 2014 rules.

After the race, Lewis Hamilton headed the drivers’ standings with 384 points, followed by Nico Rosberg on 317. Mercedes led the constructors’ table on 701, with Red Bull Racing on 405.

Sebastian Vettel and Daniel Ricciardo were further penalised for having their front wings replaced after qualifying, which violated parc fermé regulations even though the wings were deemed illegal, and were forced to start from the pit lane instead of the back of the grid.
