Championship background
Sebastian Vettel arrived at round 5 leading the 2017 F1 World Championship on 86 points, with Lewis Hamilton on 73. Mercedes headed the constructors’ standings with 136 points.
Race entries
The 10 teams kept the same race line-ups for the Spanish Grand Prix. Sergey Sirotkin also took part in practice.
Free Practice
Lewis Hamilton led FP1 as teams introduced upgrades for the European part of the season. Fernando Alonso’s home weekend began badly with an immediate engine failure, while Sebastian Vettel briefly stopped with a transmission concern before returning. McLaren’s lost running left it unable to complete the comparison work planned for its revised car.
Lewis Hamilton stayed ahead in FP2, but Ferrari narrowed the gap and looked competitive over longer runs. Fernando Alonso joined late after McLaren completed its engine change. Debris from Carlos Sainz’s car caused a short red flag, after which a crowded circuit made the remaining race-preparation work more difficult.
Kimi Räikkönen led Ferrari’s FP3 one-two while Valtteri Bottas missed most of the hour after a water leak required another power-unit installation. Sebastian Vettel also stopped in the pit lane late on and did not return. Both teams therefore carried technical concerns into qualifying despite their strong pace.

What happened in the 2017 Spanish Grand Prix?
Sebastian Vettel beat Lewis Hamilton away from the line and took the lead. Behind them, contact involving Valtteri Bottas, Kimi Räikkönen and Max Verstappen eliminated the Ferrari and Red Bull drivers, while Fernando Alonso was also forced wide in the opening scramble.
Ferrari stopped Sebastian Vettel first, while Mercedes kept Lewis Hamilton out longer. Vettel then lost valuable time behind Valtteri Bottas before completing an assertive pass, allowing Hamilton to remain within strategic reach.
Stoffel Vandoorne‘s collision with Felipe Massa triggered a virtual safety car. Mercedes used the opportunity to fit Hamilton with soft tyres, while Vettel later took the mandatory alternative compound. The pair ran alongside one another as Vettel rejoined, with the Ferrari initially keeping the lead.
Lewis Hamilton used his tyre advantage to pass Sebastian Vettel on lap 44 and held on to win. Valtteri Bottas retired with an engine failure, promoting Daniel Ricciardo to third. Pascal Wehrlein delivered valuable Sauber points despite a five-second penalty for his pit-entry approach.
Further down the points places, Carlos Sainz, Pascal Wehrlein, Daniil Kvyat and Romain Grosjean completed the scoring positions. Lewis Hamilton set the fastest lap, but no bonus point was awarded under the 2017 rules.
After the race, Sebastian Vettel headed the drivers’ standings with 104 points, followed by Lewis Hamilton on 98. Mercedes led the constructors’ table on 161, with Ferrari on 153.
