Sebastian Vettel nursed a steering problem to victory in Hungary, with Kimi Räikkönen protecting Ferrari‘s one-two. Mercedes briefly swapped its drivers in pursuit, but Lewis Hamilton ultimately returned third place to Valtteri Bottas as promised.

Championship background

Sebastian Vettel arrived at round 11 leading the 2017 F1 World Championship on 177 points, with Lewis Hamilton on 176. Mercedes headed the constructors’ standings with 330 points.

Race entries

Paul di Resta replaced the unwell Felipe Massa at Williams from qualifying onwards, having not taken part in practice.

Free Practice

Daniel Ricciardo led FP1 as the quicker 2017 cars comfortably eclipsed the previous year’s times. Grip remained elusive, however, with Sebastian Vettel and Stoffel Vandoorne spinning and Romain Grosjean touching the barriers. Antonio Giovinazzi crashed at Turn 11 during his Haas appearance, causing a red flag, before Jolyon Palmer’s damaged front wing brought another stoppage at the finish.

Daniel Ricciardo stayed fastest in FP2, but two more accidents disrupted race preparation. Pascal Wehrlein crashed heavily at Turn 11, and Jolyon Palmer later hit the barriers at the final corner. Kevin Magnussen’s running was delayed by repairs to the Haas that Antonio Giovinazzi had damaged, while Kimi Räikkönen briefly lost power before recovering and returning to the pits.

Ferrari took over in FP3, with Sebastian Vettel leading Kimi Räikkönen as the field prepared for qualifying. Friday’s pacesetter Daniel Ricciardo had a much less productive morning: a mechanical problem stopped his Red Bull at Turn 9 just after halfway. He consequently lost the closing part of the session and its final quick-lap preparation.

Nico Hülkenberg received a five-place grid penalty for an unscheduled gearbox change.

Daniil Kvyat received a three-place grid penalty for impeding Lance Stroll during Q1.

Sergio Pérez and Kevin Magnussen set identical lap times in Q1. As Pérez was the first to set his time, he was considered to have qualified ahead of Magnussen.

What happened in the 2017 Hungarian Grand Prix?

Sebastian Vettel led away, but the two Red Bulls collided at Turn 2. Max Verstappen locked up and hit Daniel Ricciardo, damaging the radiator and ending Ricciardo’s race. Verstappen received a ten-second penalty and the safety car was deployed.

Vettel later reported that his steering was pulling to one side. Ferrari instructed him to avoid the kerbs, and his reduced pace brought Kimi Räikkönen and the Mercedes drivers into contention. Räikkönen remained behind rather than attack his team-mate.

Mercedes released Lewis Hamilton past Valtteri Bottas to challenge the Ferraris, with an agreement to reverse the swap if Hamilton could not pass them. The Hungaroring offered few openings, and Ferrari retained control despite Vettel’s compromised car.

Hamilton honoured the agreement at the final corner, allowing Bottas back into third even as Max Verstappen approached. Fernando Alonso finished sixth and set the fastest lap, while Stoffel Vandoorne‘s tenth gave McLaren its first double points finish of the season.

Further down the points places, Carlos Sainz, Sergio Pérez, Esteban Ocon and Stoffel Vandoorne completed the scoring positions. Fernando Alonso set the fastest lap, but no bonus point was awarded under the 2017 rules.

After the race, Sebastian Vettel headed the drivers’ standings with 202 points, followed by Lewis Hamilton on 188. Mercedes led the constructors’ table on 357, with Ferrari on 318.
