Championship background

Sebastian Vettel arrived at round 4 leading the 2011 F1 World Championship on 68 points, with Lewis Hamilton on 47. Red Bull Racing headed the constructors’ standings with 105 points.

Race entries

The 12 teams kept the same race line-ups for the Turkish Grand Prix. Daniel Ricciardo, Karun Chandhok, Nico Hulkenberg also took part in practice.

Free Practice

Wet FP1 conditions limited upgrade evaluation and dry-tyre preparation, with McLaren doing very little running. Fernando Alonso set the pace, but Sebastian Vettel crashed after putting a wheel over the exit kerb at Turn 8. The damage ended his Friday running and left Red Bull short of comparative data.

A drying FP2 allowed teams to recover some preparation, and Jenson Button led Nico Rosberg. Sebastian Vettel remained sidelined, while Fernando Alonso lost running to a hydraulic problem. Pastor Maldonado crashed after encountering a damp patch at Turn 8; Jérôme d’Ambrosio subsequently received a grid penalty for ignoring the yellow flags at the scene.

Sebastian Vettel returned to lead FP3 by the smallest of margins over Michael Schumacher despite missing Friday’s dry running. Red Bull continued evaluating its rear wing, but the revised exhaust damaged in Sebastian Vettel’s crash was no longer available. Nico Rosberg also had difficult moments at Turn 8 as Mercedes showed stronger qualifying potential.

Jérôme d'Ambrosio was given a five-place grid penalty, for ignoring yellow flags in the area of Pastor Maldonado ‘s accident in the second free practice session.

Kamui Kobayashi failed to set a time in qualifying after experiencing problems with his fuel pump. However, he was permitted to take part in the race because he had consistently demonstrated lap times that were well within the 107% margin during free practice.

What happened in the 2011 Turkish Grand Prix?

Vettel retained the lead and built a useful advantage during the opening stint. Rosberg challenged near the front early on, but the Mercedes could not maintain the same pace as the leading Red Bull and Ferrari contenders.

Alonso moved into contention for second and fought Webber through the race. The Red Bull driver ultimately made his fresher tyres count in the closing stages, passing the Ferrari to restore a team one-two.

Hamilton won his intra-team contest with Button for fourth. Button’s attempt to make fewer stops left him vulnerable on worn tyres, and Rosberg also passed him before the finish.

Vettel won ahead of Webber and Alonso, with Hamilton fourth, Rosberg fifth and Button sixth. Kobayashi recovered from the back to score a point, while Timo Glock failed to start after a gearbox problem.

Further down the points places, Nick Heidfeld, Vitaly Petrov, Sébastien Buemi and Kamui Kobayashi completed the scoring positions. Mark Webber set the fastest lap, but no bonus point was awarded under the 2011 rules.

After the race, Sebastian Vettel headed the drivers’ standings with 93 points, followed by Lewis Hamilton on 59. Red Bull Racing led the constructors’ table on 148, with McLaren on 105.
