Championship background

Sebastian Vettel arrived at round 14 leading the 2011 F1 World Championship on 284 points, with Fernando Alonso on 172. Red Bull Racing headed the constructors’ standings with 451 points.

Race entries

The 12 teams kept the same race line-ups for the Singapore Grand Prix. Narain Karthikeyan also took part in practice.

Free Practice

Loose kerbing delayed FP1 and shortened it to an hour, with further interruptions following Heikki Kovalainen’s car fire and more displaced kerb sections. Mark Webber and Timo Glock also made contact, damaging both cars. Lewis Hamilton led, but repeated stoppages left teams struggling to complete their planned running under the lights.

Sebastian Vettel led FP2 after further circuit repairs, while Jenson Button stopped at Turn 14 and could not restart. Sebastien Buemi damaged his suspension against a barrier, and mechanical problems restricted Jaime Alguersuari and Paul di Resta. Renault abandoned Vitaly Petrov’s upgraded bodywork because of overheating, adding another complication to an already disrupted practice day.

Mark Webber set the pace in FP3, while Jenson Button finally completed a useful supersoft run after his shortened Friday session. Sebastian Vettel lost time behind traffic on his quick lap, making his position less representative of his potential. Lewis Hamilton locked up, and Michael Schumacher’s preparation was hindered by a KERS problem.

What happened in the 2011 Singapore Grand Prix?

Vettel led away while Button moved into second. Webber lost ground at the start, and Hamilton also slipped backwards, leaving both with overtaking work to do on a circuit that rarely makes it easy.

Hamilton and Massa collided during Hamilton’s recovery, damaging the McLaren‘s front wing and puncturing a Ferrari tyre. Hamilton received a drive-through penalty, while Schumacher later crashed into Pérez and brought out the safety car.

Backmarkers separated Vettel and Button at the restart, helping the leader rebuild a margin. Button reduced the gap in the closing laps, but ran out of time to challenge for the lead.

Vettel won ahead of Button, Webber and Alonso. Hamilton recovered fifth and di Resta finished sixth. With five races remaining, Vettel led Button by 124 points, with only 125 still available.

Further down the points places, Nico Rosberg, Adrian Sutil, Felipe Massa and Sergio Pérez completed the scoring positions. Jenson Button set the fastest lap, but no bonus point was awarded under the 2011 rules.

After the race, Sebastian Vettel headed the drivers’ standings with 309 points, followed by Jenson Button on 185. Red Bull Racing led the constructors’ table on 491, with McLaren on 353.
