Championship background

Nico Rosberg arrived at round 11 leading the 2016 F1 World Championship on 168 points, with Lewis Hamilton on 167. Mercedes headed the constructors’ standings with 335 points.

Race entries

The 11 teams kept the same race line-ups for the Hungarian Grand Prix. Charles Leclerc, Esteban Ocon also took part in practice.

Free Practice

Overnight showers left a slippery surface for FP1, initially requiring intermediates before slicks became usable. Lewis Hamilton led Mercedes’ strong opening performance once teams fitted supersofts. Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel both spun but continued, while the later running focused on tyre behaviour over longer stints on the resurfaced circuit.

Nico Rosberg led FP2 after Lewis Hamilton crashed at Turn 11, ending his participation while Mercedes checked the car for damage. Sebastian Vettel reported gearbox trouble, and Fernando Alonso needed a replacement floor. Late stoppages for Felipe Nasr and Carlos Sainz added to a disrupted session as the remaining drivers worked through race simulations.

Nico Rosberg led FP3, but Max Verstappen brought Red Bull within a fraction of Mercedes’ pace. Lewis Hamilton, recovering from his Friday accident, reported overheating and returned to the pits during the session. Teams then switched their attention to qualifying simulations, with Red Bull’s improvement suggesting a closer contest than the earlier running had indicated.

Qualifying

Nico Rosberg headed qualifying for Mercedes, with Lewis Hamilton second and Daniel Ricciardo third.

Rain and red flags disrupted qualifying before the circuit dried. Nico Rosberg took pole on his final lap, while Lewis Hamilton‘s last attempt was compromised by yellow flags after Fernando Alonso spun. The stewards accepted Rosberg’s reduction in speed through the flagged area.
