Championship background

Lewis Hamilton arrived at round 15 leading the 2016 F1 World Championship on 250 points, with Nico Rosberg on 248. Mercedes headed the constructors’ standings with 498 points.

Race entries

The 11 teams kept the same race line-ups for the Singapore Grand Prix.

Free Practice

Max Verstappen led FP1 as Red Bull started strongly on the streets. Jenson Button stopped early before returning after fuel-system repairs, while Romain Grosjean completed only three laps because of a technical problem. Nico Rosberg then hit the barrier at Turn 18 and broke his front wing, ending Mercedes’ session with repairs to make.

Nico Rosberg recovered to lead FP2 while Lewis Hamilton’s running ended with a hydraulic problem. Daniel Ricciardo spun after clipping a barrier, and Romain Grosjean damaged his rear wing in another spin. Those interruptions complicated race preparation as the remaining drivers assessed tyre wear and dealt with the inevitable traffic around Marina Bay.

Nico Rosberg led FP3, but Lewis Hamilton repeatedly locked up and ran off at Turn 7, compromising his qualifying simulations. Pascal Wehrlein’s barrier contact caused a red flag to clear scattered debris. A large lizard also briefly crossed the circuit, adding an unusual moment to an otherwise demanding final practice session.

Sergio Pérez received a five-place grid penalty for failing to slow for yellow flags and an additional three-place grid penalty for passing Esteban Gutiérrez under yellows.

Romain Grosjean received a five-place grid penalty for a new gearbox.

Sebastian Vettel received a five-place grid penalty for unscheduled gearbox changes, and a twenty-place grid penalty for using additional power unit elements.

What happened in the 2016 Singapore Grand Prix?

Rosberg led away as Nico Hülkenberg hit the pit wall following contact with Carlos Sainz, bringing out the safety car. Romain Grosjean had already been ruled out before the start by a brake problem.

Rosberg kept Ricciardo behind him as the leaders managed the demanding street race. Lewis Hamilton struggled to challenge the leading pair, while Kimi Räikkönen stayed involved in the contest for the final podium place.

A late tyre change gave Ricciardo the pace to close rapidly on Rosberg. Mercedes kept its leader out, leaving Rosberg to protect his advantage on older tyres as the Red Bull drew closer with every lap.

Rosberg reached the flag just ahead of Ricciardo, with Hamilton third and Räikkönen fourth. Vettel’s recovery brought fifth, ahead of Max Verstappen and Fernando Alonso. Rosberg regained the championship lead with his third consecutive win.

Further down the points places, Fernando Alonso, Sergio Pérez, Daniil Kvyat and Kevin Magnussen completed the scoring positions. Daniel Ricciardo set the fastest lap, but no bonus point was awarded under the 2016 rules.

After the race, Nico Rosberg headed the drivers’ standings with 273 points, followed by Lewis Hamilton on 265. Mercedes led the constructors’ table on 538, with Red Bull Racing on 316.
