Lewis Wins the 2020 Eifel Grand Prix

The Eifel Grand Prix was a unique chapter in F1 history. Held on 11 October 2020 at the Nürburgring, the race was created as part of the heavily revised 2020 calendar following the global pandemic.

Officially titled the Formula 1 Aramco Großer Preis der Eifel 2020, it was Formula One’s return to the Nürburgring for the first time since 2013. Despite Germany’s rich motorsport heritage, the event would become both the first and only Eifel Grand Prix, and as of 2026, the most recent Formula One World Championship race held in the country.

What To Know?

  • One and Only: The Eifel Grand Prix was held just once, in 2020 at the Nürburgring, making it one of the rarest race names in Formula One history.
  • Record-Equalling Win: Lewis Hamilton secured his 91st career victory, matching the all-time wins record set by Michael Schumacher.
  • Germany’s Most Recent F1 Race: As of 2026, the 2020 Eifel Grand Prix remains the last Formula One World Championship event held in Germany.
  • Fog Disrupted Weekend: Friday practice was cancelled due to heavy fog preventing the medical helicopter from operating, leaving teams with minimal preparation before qualifying.

Eifel Grand Prix Winner: 2020

The race took place on the 5.1-kilometre GP Strecke layout at the Nürburgring, a circuit nestled in the Eifel mountains of western Germany. Known for unpredictable weather and technical corners, the modern configuration still carries echoes of the legendary Nordschleife that made the venue famous.

Cold temperatures defined the weekend, with Friday practice sessions cancelled due to heavy fog that prevented medical helicopters from operating. Teams entered qualifying with minimal running, adding uncertainty to an already compressed season.

Hamilton Matches a Legend

Victory went to Lewis Hamilton, who started second on the grid for Mercedes and controlled the race once in the lead.

The win carried enormous historical weight. It marked Hamilton’s 91st career Grand Prix victory, equalling the long-standing record set by Michael Schumacher. Schumacher’s achievement had stood as one of Formula One’s most iconic milestones, and matching it at a German circuit added a symbolic layer to the moment.

Hamilton ultimately secured the victory by 4.470 seconds, further strengthening his march toward a seventh World Championship that season.

A Race of Milestones

The 2020 Eifel Grand Prix was the eleventh round of the 2020 Formula One World Championship and one of several additional events added to maintain a viable season.

Although conceived as a temporary solution, the race delivered lasting significance. Beyond Hamilton’s record-equalling triumph, it provided Germany with what remains, as of 2025, its most recent appearance on the Formula One calendar.

A Singular Entry in the Record Books

Unlike other Grand Prix that span decades, the Eifel Grand Prix exists as a single line in Formula One’s statistical history. One circuit, one race, one winner.

Yet its impact was considerable. It celebrated the return of Formula One to the Nürburgring, produced a landmark achievement in the sport’s record books, and added a distinctive chapter to a season defined by adaptation and resilience.

For that reason alone, the Eifel Grand Prix remains far more than just a one-off experiment. It stands as a reminder of how even a temporary race can leave a permanent mark on Formula One history.
