Championship background

Ayrton Senna arrived at round 14 leading the 1991 F1 World Championship on 83 points, with Nigel Mansell on 59. McLaren headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 114 points.

Race entries

Alessandro Zanardi made his Formula 1 debut at Jordan in place of Roberto Moreno. Gabriele Tarquini moved from AGS to Fondmetal, with Olivier Grouillard taking the vacant AGS seat. Bartels again replaced Johnny Herbert at Lotus. Chaves refused to drive the Coloni, leaving the team without a participant for the weekend.

Pre-qualifying

Martin Brundle and Mark Blundell headed the reduced seven-car session, with Michele Alboreto third. Gabriele Tarquini immediately reached the main sessions in his new Fondmetal, narrowly beating Alex Caffi to the fourth place. Barbazza and Olivier Grouillard were also eliminated in what would prove to be AGS‘s final Grand Prix appearance.

Friday Free Practice

Nigel Mansell led Friday practice despite an ankle injury sustained away from the circuit. The new venue’s smooth surface offered a fresh opportunity to cars that had struggled over bumps elsewhere, notably Leyton House. Williams nevertheless encountered technical difficulties during the day, while several drivers were learning new machinery or a new team as well as the circuit.

Saturday Free Practice

Nigel Mansell was quickest again on Saturday morning, ahead of Ayrton Senna and Gerhard Berger, but the new asphalt offered uncertain grip. Ferrari struggled to find the adhesion expected from its car, and Jordan had difficulty getting its qualifying tyres working. Wind and a slippery surface would become still more influential in the afternoon, making Friday’s qualifying times especially valuable.

Saturday Qualifying

Saturday’s wind and poor grip prevented a wholesale improvement. Ayrton Senna was fastest in the session but also suffered an engine failure that left oil on the circuit. Gerhard Berger retained pole from Nigel Mansell, Ayrton Senna and Riccardo Patrese, with Michael Schumacher fifth and Alain Prost sixth.

Sunday warm-up

Rain transformed the Sunday warm-up, with Nigel Mansell again fastest as numerous drivers explored the slippery limits of the new circuit. Nelson Piquet and Gerhard Berger followed him on the timesheets. Conditions continued to change before the start, leaving teams facing a difficult tyre decision: the rain stopped as the field set off, but the track remained wet.

What happened in the 1991 Spanish Grand Prix?

Gerhard Berger led the early running, while Michael Schumacher briefly passed Nigel Mansell. Nigel Mansell recovered and then fought Ayrton Senna side by side down the main straight, the two cars almost touching before the Williams gained the position. The switch to dry tyres shuffled the order again.

Ayrton Senna emerged ahead of Nigel Mansell through the stops but later spun as rain returned. Nigel Mansell caught and passed Gerhard Berger for the lead, while Michael Schumacher‘s attack on the McLaren ended in a spin of his own. Gerhard Berger subsequently retired with an electrical problem.

Nigel Mansell won from Alain Prost and Riccardo Patrese, with Jean Alesi fourth, Ayrton Senna fifth and Michael Schumacher sixth. The result reduced Ayrton Senna‘s advantage to 16 points with two races remaining. Barcelona had delivered an absorbing debut and ensured that the championship would continue to Suzuka.

After the race, Ayrton Senna headed the drivers’ standings with 85 points, followed by Nigel Mansell on 69. Williams led the constructors’ table on 117, with McLaren on 116.
