Miami Grand Prix Winner: 2023 to Today

The inaugural Miami Grand Prix in 2022 was won by Max Verstappen, driving for Red Bull Racing.

Starting from third on the grid, Verstappen quickly showed the pace of the RB18. After dispatching Carlos Sainz early on, he chased down pole sitter Charles Leclerc and made a decisive move for the lead. Once in front, Verstappen controlled the race despite a late Safety Car that briefly threatened to undo his advantage.

The victory was significant for several reasons. It marked the first-ever Formula One race in Miami and reinforced Verstappen’s credentials as the benchmark driver of the new ground-effect era introduced in 2022. It also laid the foundation for a period of Red Bull dominance.

If 2022 was impressive, 2023 was emphatic. Verstappen once again stood on the top step in Miami, this time after starting ninth on the grid. A compromised qualifying session left him out of position, but the RB19’s pace, combined with Verstappen’s tyre management, proved unstoppable.

Overtaking with measured aggression, he climbed through the field and extended his stint on the hard compound tyres. When he finally assumed the lead, he built a comfortable margin to secure back-to-back Miami victories.

This performance underlined the superiority of Red Bull in 2023 and highlighted Verstappen’s ability to convert adversity into opportunity. Winning from ninth at a circuit where track position is important remains one of the standout drives in Miami’s short history.

The 2024 Miami Grand Prix brought a landmark moment for Lando Norris and McLaren.

After years of near misses, Norris secured his maiden Formula One victory in Miami. Starting fifth, he capitalised on race circumstances and strong pace from an upgraded McLaren package that had transformed the team’s competitiveness.

When the opportunity came, Norris kept his composure. He managed the restart phases cleanly and controlled the gap to take a popular and emotional first win. For McLaren, it signalled a return to consistent front-running form. For Norris, it removed the question mark that had followed him throughout his early career.

In 2025, the momentum shifted firmly in McLaren’s favour as Oscar Piastri claimed victory in Miami.

Starting fourth, Piastri delivered a controlled and mature performance. His racecraft and consistency allowed him to seize the lead and maintain it under pressure. The win reinforced his status as one of the sport’s brightest talents and demonstrated that McLaren’s resurgence was no one-off.

Back-to-back Miami victories for the team in 2024 and 2025 illustrated how quickly the competitive picture in Formula One can change. What had begun as a Red Bull stronghold became a showcase for McLaren’s technical progress and driver strength.

A Young Race Building Its Own Legacy

With only four editions held so far, the Miami Grand Prix is still writing its story. Yet it has already delivered.

As the race continues on the calendar for years to come, future winners will add new chapters. For now, Miami stands as a sign of Formula One’s expansion in the United States and a circuit that has quickly earned its place in modern F1 history.
