Few modern Formula One venues blend history and high stakes quite like the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix at Imola. Hosted at the legendary Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari in northern Italy, the race was introduced in 2020 during a period of global uncertainty and quickly re-established itself as one of the most atmospheric events of the season.
Although it lasted only a handful of seasons before making way for Madrid’s new Madring circuit in 2026, the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix delivered drama, dominant drives, and defining moments.

Emilia Romagna Grand Prix Winners: 2020 to 2025
The 2020 race marked Formula One’s return to Imola for the first time since 2006. Originally intended as a one-off addition to a pandemic-disrupted calendar, the event used a compressed two-day format, creating a unique challenge for teams and drivers.
While Valtteri Bottas secured pole position, it was Lewis Hamilton who once again demonstrated race-day mastery. Driving the dominant Mercedes W11, Hamilton capitalised on strategy and pace to claim victory.
The win contributed to Mercedes securing a record-breaking seventh consecutive Constructors’ Championship and reinforced Hamilton’s march toward his seventh world title.
In 2021, Imola produced one of the most dramatic races of the season. Wet conditions at the start created chaos, with multiple incidents shaking up the order.
Starting third on the grid, Max Verstappen made an aggressive move around the outside of Hamilton at Tamburello on the opening lap. From there, the Dutch driver controlled proceedings despite red flags and changing track conditions.
The victory for Red Bull Racing proved to be an early statement in what would become a fierce championship battle between Verstappen and Hamilton.
The 2022 edition introduced Formula One’s sprint format to Imola for the first time. Verstappen seized control early in the weekend and never relinquished it.

After securing pole through the sprint, Verstappen led every lap of the Grand Prix, set the fastest lap, and claimed victory. It marked his second career Grand Chelem and underlined Red Bull’s growing dominance in the ground-effect era.
Ferrari’s home hopes faded amid strategic and driver errors, adding extra significance to Red Bull’s commanding performance on Italian soil.
After the 2023 race was cancelled due to severe flooding in the Emilia-Romagna region, the Grand Prix returned in 2024 with renewed anticipation.
Verstappen once again stood on the top step, but this time the margin was razor-thin. A late charge from McLaren’s Lando Norris closed the gap dramatically in the final laps, turning what had seemed a comfortable victory into a tense sprint to the flag.

2025 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix: F1 Race, Qualifying & Winners
Despite the pressure, Verstappen held firm, adding another Imola win to his growing collection and reinforcing his command of the season.
The 2025 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix proved to be the event’s final chapter, as Formula One prepared to shift its focus to Madrid’s new street circuit in 2026.
Verstappen delivered a fitting farewell. Starting second, he controlled the race ahead of both McLarens to secure his fourth win at Imola under the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix banner.
It was a performance that encapsulated the modern history of the race: Red Bull strength, Verstappen precision, and relentless competition from an improving McLaren squad.
A Short but Memorable Modern Era
Across five seasons between 2020 and 2025, the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix produced two different winners and a clear narrative arc. Hamilton claimed the first victory of the revived event, but it quickly became a stronghold for Verstappen and Red Bull.
Though its time under the Emilia Romagna name was brief, Imola once again proved why it remains one of Formula One’s most revered circuits.
