Juan Manuel Fangio and Moss delivered another Mercedes one-two in the 1955 Dutch Grand Prix, but Luigi Musso made them work for it. The Maserati driver kept the leaders under pressure before a spin ended his hopes of turning the Zandvoort contest into an upset.

Championship background
Juan Manuel Fangio arrived at round 5 leading the 1955 F1 World Championship on 19 points, with Maurice Trintignant on 11 1/3.
Race entries
The race followed the Le Mans disaster, casting a sombre backdrop over the meeting. Lancia and Vanwall were absent, and Castellotti and Hawthorn joined Trintignant at Ferrari. Mercedes brought Fangio, Moss and Kling, while Maserati relied on Behra, Mieres and Musso alongside the private entries.
Friday private testing
Mercedes hired the track in the morning to compare its available cars before official practice. The team had several wheelbase and brake configurations, allowing the drivers to assess which suited Zandvoort’s corners. This preparation was separate from the timed session that followed.
Friday timed practice
Ferrari initially had unsuitable axle ratios and changed them before improving. Maserati looked well prepared, although Behra remained affected by a leg injury sustained at Le Mans. Moss set the quickest lap in the afternoon. The resurfaced circuit and more powerful Formula One cars made comparisons with the previous Formula Two lap record particularly misleading.
Saturday final qualifying
Fangio improved to 1:40.0 and took pole, while Mercedes completed a sweep of the front row. Musso’s strong lap put him fourth, ahead of Hawthorn. The absence of prompt public timing announcements obscured the close contest during the session, but the final order confirmed Mercedes‘ advantage and Musso’s potential to challenge.
Qualifying Classification
Friday and Saturday timed practice set the grid. Mercedes‘ earlier private test is identified separately, rather than presented as an official session for the whole field.

What happened in the 1955 Dutch Grand Prix?
Fangio led away, while Musso briefly split the Mercedes before Moss passed him. The leading pair then circulated closely together, but could not easily shake off the Maserati. Kling spun out, and Mieres moved ahead of Behra further back.
Light rain made the circuit slippery during the race. Musso continued pushing until a spin cost him time and allowed the leaders to ease their pace. Moss had a late engine scare, but the problem did not prevent him reaching the finish.
Fangio won narrowly ahead of Moss, with Musso third after a spirited challenge. Mieres finished fourth and earned the fastest-lap point, while Castellotti took fifth. The result reinforced Mercedes‘ championship strength without diminishing the quality of Musso’s drive.
After the race, Juan Manuel Fangio headed the drivers’ standings with 27 points, followed by Stirling Moss on 13.
