Crashgate: The long shadow cast by F1’s notorious 2008 Singapore Grand Prix

Singapore Grand Prix Winner: 2008 to 2009

The modern Singapore Grand Prix began in 2008 and immediately delivered drama. Fernando Alonso became the event’s first Formula One winner, charging from 15th on the grid to take victory for Renault. The race would later become one of the most controversial in F1 history due to the circumstances surrounding a mid-race crash and safety car, later becoming known as “Crash-gate”.

In 2009, Lewis Hamilton mastered the circuit from pole position for McLaren, controlling the race in a far calmer fashion than the chaotic inaugural edition.

The first two races established Singapore as physically punishing and strategically unpredictable. Even at this early stage, it was clear that winning here required patience, precision and mental resilience.

Singapore Grand Prix Winner: 2010s

The 2010s defined Singapore’s competitive identity. Fernando Alonso returned to the top step in 2010 with Ferrari, fending off relentless pressure throughout a tense race.

From 2011 onwards, Sebastian Vettel became the undisputed master of Marina Bay. Driving for Red Bull, he won in 2011, 2012 and produced a crushingly dominant performance in 2013. His fifth Singapore victory would come in 2019 with Ferrari, making him the most successful driver in the event’s history.

The hybrid era also saw Lewis Hamilton stamp his authority. Mercedes’ victories in 2014, 2017 and 2018 were often pivotal in championship battles. His 2017 win, secured after a dramatic wet-weather start, eliminated several rivals and stands as one of the race’s most significant turning points.

Between those title heavyweights, Nico Rosberg claimed a crucial win in 2016 during his championship-winning campaign, holding off intense late pressure in a race that demanded total concentration.

Singapore Grand Prix Winner: 2020s to Today

After a two-year absence from the calendar, the race returned in 2022 with mixed conditions, adding further complexity. Sergio Pérez delivered a composed drive to secure victory, expertly managing restarts and pressure on a damp track.

In 2023, Carlos Sainz produced one of the most tactically intelligent wins seen at Marina Bay. Controlling the pace for Ferrari, he manipulated the DRS effect behind to keep faster cars at bay in a strategic masterclass.

The following seasons reflected a shifting competitive order. Lando Norris dominated from pole in 2024 for McLaren, confirming both his development and the team’s resurgence. In 2025, George Russell added his name to the winners’ list with a measured and controlled performance for Mercedes.

A Race That Tests the Limits

From Alonso’s dramatic first win to Vettel’s era of dominance and the modern triumphs of Mercedes, Ferrari, Red Bull, and McLaren, the Singapore Grand Prix has consistently delivered defining moments.

The combination of tropical heat, relentless corners and concrete barriers ensures that every winner earns their place in F1 history. Victory in Singapore is never accidental. It is the reward for discipline, endurance and the capacity to perform.
