Championship background

Ayrton Senna arrived at round 7 leading the 1990 F1 World Championship on 31 points, with Alain Prost on 23. McLaren headed the constructors’ standings after the preceding race with 54 points.

Race entries

The driver line-ups remained unchanged. Leyton House introduced a revised aerodynamic package after its double non-qualification in Mexico, while Williams tried a new front-suspension arrangement. Ferrari brought dedicated qualifying machinery as it sought to build on its Mexican success.

Pre-qualifying

Eric Bernard and Aguri Suzuki led the session, with Gabriele Tarquini and Yannick Dalmas giving AGS a welcome double success at home. Olivier Grouillard narrowly missed out, followed by Roberto Moreno and Langes. Gachot’s Coloni and Giacomelli’s Life again suffered mechanical trouble before they could mount a credible challenge.

Friday Free Practice

Ayrton Senna led Friday practice ahead of the Ferraris, but the smooth new surface was changing the competitive picture. Leyton House‘s revised aerodynamics worked far better here than on Mexico’s bumps, and its drivers finally had a consistent platform. Williams evaluated its new front suspension, while Philippe Alliot‘s morning excursion added a setback to Ligier‘s home preparations.

Saturday Free Practice

Nigel Mansell set the Saturday practice pace as Ferrari continued to improve its use of qualifying tyres. McLaren struggled with overheating rubber on the smooth asphalt, and Ayrton Senna increasingly concentrated on the race. Williams was not satisfied with its suspension experiment and would abandon it before Sunday. The weekend’s progress was therefore about choosing which developments to retain as well as finding speed.

Saturday Qualifying

Gerhard Berger headed Saturday’s session and moved into second overall, but Nigel Mansell‘s Friday lap remained unbeaten. Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost shared row two, followed by Alessandro Nannini and Riccardo Patrese. Ivan Capelli qualified seventh and Mauricio Gugelmin tenth, a dramatic turnaround for Leyton House.

Sunday warm-up

Alain Prost headed a Ferrari one-two in the warm-up, with Eric Bernard an encouraging third. Ayrton Senna went off during the session as McLaren continued to seek a dependable balance. Most teams expected to stop for fresh tyres, but Leyton House planned to run through without a change, a strategy made plausible by the circuit’s smooth surface and the car’s improved behaviour.

What happened in the 1990 French Grand Prix?

The leading cars contested the early running before their tyre stops allowed Ivan Capelli and Mauricio Gugelmin to move into first and second. Leyton House‘s non-stop strategy had placed both cars at the centre of the race, forcing Alain Prost to work his way through rather than rely on a routine pit-stop advantage.

Alain Prost passed Mauricio Gugelmin, whose engine subsequently failed, and began pursuing Ivan Capelli. The Leyton House resisted for lap after lap until engine difficulties reduced its pace. Alain Prost finally moved ahead with only three laps remaining. Alessandro Nannini also retired late after briefly threatening the podium.

Alain Prost won at home, with Ivan Capelli holding on for a superb second place and Ayrton Senna third. Nelson Piquet, Gerhard Berger and Riccardo Patrese completed the points. Ferrari celebrated a major milestone, but the afternoon was equally memorable for how close Leyton House had come to a famous victory.

After the race, Ayrton Senna headed the drivers’ standings with 35 points, followed by Alain Prost on 32. McLaren led the constructors’ table on 60, with Ferrari on 45.
