What happened on this day, November 22 in Formula 1 history? Find out interesting facts and stories about Formula 1 on this day.

1934

Born on this day, Jacobus “Jackie” Pretorius was a South African racing driver who competed in four Formula One World Championship Grand Prix, making his debut on January 1, at the 1965 South African Grand Prix. In all four races, he never finished.

Pretorius also raced in national Formula One events in South Africa, where he found success during the late 1960s and early 1970s. After driving a Lotus and a Lola, he achieved two race wins in 1971 behind the wheel of a Brabham.

1970

Casimiro de Oliveira was a Portuguese racing driver who passed away on this day in Porto, Portugal. He competed in the 1938 Rio de Janeiro Grand Prix and was entered for the 1958 Portuguese Grand Prix, though he did not participate in the event.

Casimiro was the brother of filmmaker Manoel de Oliveira, who later became the longest-lived racing driver and was the last surviving pre-war driver and race winner until his passing on 2 April 2015 aged 106.

2009

Former Italian F1 driver Gino Munaron died on 22 November 2009. He competed in four races in 1960, making his debut in a privately entered Maserati at the 1960 Argentine Grand Prix, where he finished 13th. He went on to drive a Cooper for Scuderia Eugenio Castellotti later in the season, retiring twice and finishing 15th in the 1960 British Grand Prix. A brief Formula One career, Munaron failed to score any championship points.

2014

Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg edged out Lewis Hamilton to take pole position for the title-deciding 2014 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Rosberg clocked in 0.386 seconds ahead of his Mercedes teammate, while Hamilton secured second on the grid despite a session filled with minor mistakes. Hamilton, who held a 17-point lead over Rosberg, only needed a second-place finish behind his rival to clinch the championship, which he eventually did.

Meanwhile, Red Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo initially qualified in fifth, with teammate Sebastian Vettel in sixth for his final appearance with the team before moving to Ferrari for the 2015 season. However, after the FIA determined that their cars’ front wings were too flexible under aerodynamic load, both drivers were subsequently excluded from the qualifying results.

2025

Max Verstappen took command of the 2025 Las Vegas Grand Prix from the opening lap, seizing the lead from Lando Norris when the McLaren ran wide into Turn 1 off the start and stretching clear to win by 20.741s. George Russell brought Mercedes back to the podium despite steering issues, while Oscar Piastri recovered from early contact to cross the line in fourth. Kimi Antonelli climbed from 17th on the grid to finish fourth on the road, only for a false-start penalty to drop him behind Piastri in the provisional results.

Yet moments after the chequered flag, the complexion of the race changed dramatically. Scrutineering officials discovered excessive skidblock wear on both McLaren cars, below the FIA’s required 9mm minimum. The breach was sent to the stewards who, after deliberation, disqualified both Norris and Piastri from the results entirely — stripping Norris of P2 and Piastri of P4. In the revised order, Russell inherited second place, Antonelli was elevated to the podium in P3, and Charles Leclerc, Carlos Sainz, Isack Hadjar, Nico Hülkenberg and Lewis Hamilton all climbed the standings.

Behind them, the midfield points battle tightened significantly heading into the final two rounds. Esteban Ocon and Ollie Bearman climbing into the points. Valuable points for the Haas team. Yuki Tsunoda climbed from a pit-lane start to 12th ahead of Pierre Gasly and Liam Lawson. Franco Colapinto was the final classified finisher, while Alex Albon, Gabriel Bortoleto and Lance Stroll all retired after separate contact incidents. Verstappen left Vegas firmly back in the 2025 Championship hunt.
